Mate

I turned to Alpha Vincent, my eyes wide. Step brother? Tyler? He gave a small chuckle, as his hand wrapped tighter around me, and he pulled me even further into him, his head nuzzling in my neck. "You are quite predictable. Once I saw you there, I knew the man who had dumped you was Tyler. The man who made you so badly need me." I swallowed hard as he slowly turned me to a beat only he could hear. Tyler came before my eyes. He was holding onto Marianah loosely, his jaw clenched as he watched us. "Look at how jealous he is. Is that not what you came for?" I turned my head to Alpha Vincent. "How did I never know?" He shrugged. "Family business. Unfortunately, you will never be in on the drama." He suddenly released me, and the lights came back on. I watched him as he walked away, without paying heed to Tyler or Mariana. It made me question if they were even that close. I swallowed, my eyes drifting to Mariana and Tyler. Mariana was expressionless, while Tyler looked well about to explode. Unfortunately, it wasn't my business. He left me first. I turned away, then walked to the large bar. I grabbed a drink and sat on the stool, my eyes closing as I chugged the entire thing down. It burned down my throat, and I leaned further, sighing. "Some really dangerous dress right there," someone said next to me. I turned, and a face I didn't know was staring back at me, his eyes lit up humorously. "Is it?" I answered dryly before reaching for another drink. "Don't drink too much. Men could take advantage of you." I turned to him. "You are one of them." He laughed. "Not exactly. I like consent." My brows raised. "A gentleman, I see. Attractive." "Don't flatter me. I am Dylan." He gave me his hand, and I broke into a half tipsy smile, then started to reach my hand to collect it. I never did, however, as a strong hand pulled me out of the chair, and I came face to face with Tyler. His hand held mine in a grip so tight that my wrist turned a deathly white. "Let me go!" I said, my cheat heaving, my eyes wide. "What the hell do you think you are doing? Doing all that nonsense with Vincent and then..." "Did I hear my name?" I didn't need to turn, as Alpha Vincent came beside me. His coat slowly rested on my shoulders, and he wrapped a hand around my waist, as if I belonged to him. I couldn't even see Dylan in the mix, but it felt a lot more personal. Like whatever was going on went beyond just who got to leave with me. After all, Alpha Vincent hated me for Wolf High. Tyler willingly left. "Vincent..." Tyler started to talk, but Alpha Vincent raised a single finger, stopping him. "Alpha. Alpha Vincent, Tyler." I swallowed, turning slightly to Alpha Vincent. His eyes were cold and icy, and I felt his fingers add pressure to my waist. "This is not your business. This is between Jordan and I." "She owes me a dance. And you have a pregnant woman over there on her own. You are already showing genetics, Tyler." Tyler's jaws clenched hard, and for a moment there, I thought he would attack Alpha Vincent. Maybe he wanted to, but Alpha Vincent, we all knew, was way past any sort of attack. Tyler let me go roughly, pushing me back into Alpha Vincent. He held both my shoulders, his eyes darkening. "You can have her. You are showing genetics too, brother." Alpha Vincent raised a brow before he moved his hand to only hold my wrist while he came in front of me, his eyes wide. He towered above Tyler easily, and I saw him slowly push a strand of Tyler's hair away. Gently, his fingers wrapped around Tyler's tie and tightened it. I gasped, but he didn't even flinch. Tyler tried to keep a straight face , but I could see his face redden, his fingers lightly moving like he desperately wanted to push Alpha Vincent away. "Alpha," I said, but he didn't even look at me. Suddenly, he pulled Tyler closer by his tie, then leaned, so they were eye to eye. "Don't make me have to show your mate that she is marrying the bottom scraping. Don't let me have to put you in your place." Tyler's lips parted, and Alpha Vincent moved away, then let him go the same way he had done to me, causing him to trip a little backwards. He lost balance but never fell. I swallowed as Tyler's eyes met mine, his lips parted as he seethed. Alpha Vincent pulled me away, and I followed, turning occasionally to Tyler. Soon enough, he was out of sight, and we had climbed the stairs to the open balcony on the right. "Let me go," I said once he stopped, my eyes wide. He looked at me and gave me a small smirk. "You both are pathetic." "What?" "I said, you both are pathetic. Your boyfriend who chose that woman over you, because he knows he will never gain recognition from us if he takes a woman who isn't his mate, and you, the foolish girlfriend who comes here in stupid little dresses trying to gain his attention. Pathetic." I felt tears sting the back of my eyes, my chest heaving hard, my body lightly trembling from the anger that reverberated through me. "You know nothing about us." "Oh, I do know. He chose status over love. And you..." He trailed off, his hand tightening around mine. He let his eyes roam my body, then back up, a small laugh escaping him. "Is there a part of you that I do not know?" I blinked, hurt spreading in my chest. "How dare you? How f*****g dare you?" He let my hand go, but stood close. "I can. That's why I dare. What will you do? Run to Tyler?" I swallowed, and before I could think of it, I raised my hand and slapped his cheek, a tear rolling down my eyes with the force. His lips parted, and he slowly turned to me, his chest heaving, his eyes thin. "That's why you will always end up alone. That is why you need to go to bars in some stupid disguise and sleep with women because no one in their right senses would sleep with an ill mannered bastard." He raised a brow, but I turned away, took a step further, before something else occurred to me. I stopped in place, then turned to him. "And... do you really think Tyler is the bottom scraping? You are the man w***e. Imagine what the pack would think when they realized their sung hero, warrior alpha, protector, guardian... is nothing but a little p********e at a bar." He gave a small laugh, and I never will be able to quantify just how much fear that laugh sent through me. "Funny how you are one to talk, Jordan. You and your boyfriend are all talk. Walk away. Go run your mouth like you always do. Like you did last night, begging me to please you." I swallowed hard, my eyes darting against both of his, my chest heaving. I could see the anger has displaced the coolness in his eyes, too. At least, both of us will leave here with more bad memories than good. I shook my head, then turned away, fully intending to leave. This party had been a mistake. This entire party had been a little mishap I will run away from and pretend for it to have been a bad dream. I didn't go more than two steps, when suddenly, I felt my hand caught by something. I closed my eyes, my anger rising steadily. "Just leave me al..." I trailed off as I turned, my eyes wide. Alpha Vincent was exactly where I had left him, but surprise had taken over his features. He was looking down, and I slowly did too. A gasp left my lips. Between us was a single red thread, one so short none of us could move too far without the other. My lips parted, and I looked up to meet his eyes. He was looking at me too, like he was searching for answers. I had none. But we both did. We both knew what that thread was. The red thread of fate. What the f**k is the moon goddess thinking? I moved my hand, and his too moved, and I gave a small sigh, my eyes reaching for his again. I heard my wolf give a small snarl, and she said the word. The one word I really didn't need to hear right now. The one word I didn't want to be associated with Alpha Vincent with. "Mate." It became clear now. Her aim had been different. She brought me here to find her mate and I... I looked up to Alpha Vincent again. "Mate," she growled this time. I heard it. Alpha Vincent heard it. And I knew I was screwed.
