Chapter 4 DIVORCED IN DETENTION “Here is a piece of document from my client that you'll need to sign.” He explained and brought out an envelope from his suitcase, handing it over to her. “S-sign? Do I need to sign anything before you can defend me? She stammered in confusion to his statement. Ciara gradually stretched her hands to receive the envelope from him without shifting her gaze from his side. Her fear of the unknown grew as she thought of why her husband didn't come along neither did he send their family lawyer. Since she got married, no one has ever addressed her by her father's name, but now, someone she has never seen nor heard of is standing before her, addressing her by her father's name! She gradually opened the white piece of paper that was inside the envelope. She froze the moment she saw the bold heading written on the paper, ‘DIVORCE AGREEMENT.’ Without reading the paper, she flung it at him, saying, “What nonsense is this?” Her eyes widened and her brows raised as she asked impatiently. “That is the divorce letter from my client. Please, I'll need you to sign it now before I leave.” The man said calmly. Ciara stared at him. “First, I'm still officially married to the Marcos family, so you have no right whatsoever to address me by my father's name. And secondly, I don't know you, nor have I heard of you from your client, as you claimed. Get the hell out of my sight with this rubbish!” She stated sternly and turned her back to return to her cell. Her already shattered heart was again crushed into pieces .A man she has dedicated three years of her life to loving him is asking her to sign a divorce while in detention. “Miss Ciara, please! You can't leave like that; you need to sign up these papers before I can leave here.” The man called out with a hint of desperation in his voice and worry in his face. Ciara halted her steps and turned, “Mr. Davis, or whatever you call yourself, tell your client that I'll not pen down my signature on anything unless I see him!” She declared and turned to take her leave. “You've not even read the agreement! He's granting you huge alimony. 50% of his personal properties, including the newly built house in Los Angeles." The man screamed. Unbeknownst to him, Ciara is not a materialistic woman. Besides, all the wealth that Adrian possesses is as a result of her marriage to him. “You heard me clearly. Call your client to come by himself if you want me to sign those papers.” She declared again and left for her cell, ignoring the man's shouts at her. She tried to be strong but couldn't help but to break into tears the moment she got into her cell. Of all the misfortunes she has ever imagined could happen to her life, divorce was never part of them. Adrian has loved and cherished her all through their period of dating until the morning of her late father's memorial. As she sat on the floor, the images of the divorce agreement flashed her eyes in imagination as a flashing thunder lightning. How could she ever imagine that the same man who professed love to her, assuring her of his full support, would present her with a divorce letter in less than forty-eight hours of being wrongly accused of a crime she never committed? “My life is meaningless without you. Thank you for bringing out the best in me. I promise to love you till my last breath!” Those words he uttered to her the last time they made love echoed in her ears repeatedly. Since the day of her father's death, Ciara has abstained from having her marital obligations with her husband in the other room. She'll always push him away, muttering that she's not in the mood as she's still mourning her father's death. Adrian never ceased to be an understanding husband. He never forced himself on her for any reason; rather, he gave her moral support to help her healing process for the loss of her father. The night her father's demise clock one year can never be erased in her memory. That was the night she felt an urge of intimacy with her husband after a year. She made sure that she performed her best that night like never before. For three years of marriage, Adrian has never moaned and lost himself in clouds of excitement and satisfaction of his manly desires, as he did that night. Her joy was that even after starving him of her body for a long time, she had never seen nor suspected her husband of cheating. Adrian was the type of man every woman would love to have as a husband. The love-making session cannot even be compared to their wedding night. “Thank God I have my wife back!” He said and heaved a sigh of relief while he embraced her slim body lying on his chest. A few minutes after she left the so-called lawyer to secretly mourn her unexpected divorce, her attention was called upon for the second time to the counter. She still exhibited doubt in her heart that Adrian could never do such to her. Which was why she insisted that he come by himself before she signs the annulment. “Adrian, thank God you're here!” She exclaimed excitedly when she saw him and began flying her arms in the air to hug him. To her greatest surprise, Adrian shifted back to prevent her from touching him. “Adrian!” She called out in disbelief. “What have I done to deserve this?” Ciara asked politely, with her blurry eyes which was suddenly turning red “Did I…” “Sorry for keeping you waiting, honey. She's an old classmate of mine, and it's been decades since we last met,” said the woman who just walked in and stood beside Adrian, giving him a peg on the cheek. Ciara was shocked by the marrows and couldn't finish her statement. “It's nothing, sweetheart,” Adrian responded with a smile and instantly switched his expression to a deadly frown before he said anything to Ciara. “I heard that you insisted on seeing me. I'm here now; can you sign the papers so that I can leave?” He said coldly. Ciara's broken and crushed heart gets shattered the more. The severity of the pain in her heart couldn't allow her to answer him immediately. Her heartbeat increased ten times faster than usual. She nearly lost herself and collapsed, but then a sharp voice reminded her inwardly of the need to stand in for herself when everyone has left. Immediately, she summoned the courage to talk, ensuring she put on a bitter smile before saying anything. “So it's true? You actually sent your lawyer to give me divorce papers while I'm still in detention!” She said softly with a surge of bitterness and a hidden sob in her tone. Paw!! Ciara landed a resounding slap on Adrian's face. Before she takes her hands down, she also felt a heavy slap on her face from Adrian's mistress. “How dare you slap my man in my presence?”
