" and always remember to never take that necklace off, it was your mothers only treasured possession," Aunt Rose said for the hundred and fifth time, not that I was counting but it felt like she had said it a 100 times already.
I clutched the necklace in my hand Aunt Rose had given me the night before looking at it again it was shaped in an odd way like whoever made it couldn't decide whether it should be a circle or a heart shape or even more it had fine edges to it and yet the edges seemed like curves it was silver and had a blue stone so small that you couldn't see the stone except you looked at it very well in all it was beautiful and I was grateful. But I was curious and felt some type of way a bit annoyed
" why didn't you give me this earlier" I had asked her curious as to why she would keep my mother's neck chain from me. She dropped her empty cup of coffee and before standing up to leave she answered with just three words
"you weren't ready" it sounded like there was a hidden meaning to it a story waiting to be told I wanted to stop her and ask her for what but she had left already for her room,
We were driving as Aunt Rose rolled out her do's and dont's " always remember to call often especially when something seems strange" she said for the hundredth time and I replied
" yes" for the hundredth time. She was taking me to the airport where I would take a flight to Rankeda University after being informed by yet another mail from Ranked University that they had direct flights to their school I knew the school meant business with me and I wanted to find out why. I mean why would a school go through these lengths and all for a scholarship student?. When we finally arrived the airport Aunt Rose pulled me in for a long hug tears rolling down from her eyes, she looked so sad and for a moment I felt like I wanted to stay with her and not leave but she spoke before I could it's like she could read my mind.
" you should go now my before you miss your flight," she says with a smile and I chuckle
" Remember to stay in touch when you can," she said and I smile at her hugging her before going to the boarding area, I turned back one last time to see her and she waved at me smiling I waved back and walked to the boarding area. The plane was on a secluded part of the hanger and it looked like nothing I had seen before the Plane was painted red a matte red I would soon learn that the interior was just as breathtaking.
The boarding area for the flight to Rankeda was filled with younglings like me, entering the plane and gazing at faces while looking for my seat I could almost swear I was in the wrong place the first row had a bow and two girls I think they had rosy cheeks and red hair the guy had freckles rather than rosy cheeks and their hair could have been styled by an expensive stylist they were beautiful like models for a magazine shoot. It didn't take me long to find my seat and I appreciated that my seat was in the third row. I looked around some girls had purple hair, some had black guys had hair draped in bronze they were all so beautiful I was the only one with an afro pulled back and sad to say my hair was just an ordinary dark brown colour.
They were beautiful, I stared at a girl who was standing with two guys she immediately turned her gaze to me her skin was so ale yet so beautiful it looked like ceramic I quickly looked away my cheeks warming up having being caught staring. I decide to play it down so as not to attract attention to myself. The two seats on my row where empty and I felt grateful at least that would provide me with some alone time.
Up until a girl skidded along smiling with teeth as bright as the sun" Hello I see you took my favourite seat" she says while taking the seat next to me I blush" well the seat was empty" I say and she smiles instead
" my name is Karen," she says stretching her left hand to me for a handshake which I found very strange, " Uhm , Zara," I said it more like I was asking a question rather than answering it, she simply chuckled
" well nice to meet you Zara" and I stared at her as she got comfortable putting on her seatbelt. She had the most beautiful set of eyes I had ever seen purpled that swirled with flecks of blue her nose looked like it was sculpted by God himself her skin was flawless as though she had put on concealer her lashes touched her cheeks when she blinked and her eyes had a dark lining she was beautiful I checked her hair colour Blue a vibrant blue which was not hard to miss.
The realization that everyone on the plane looked like the came for a magazine shoot made me shift in my seat again it was a 4 hours flight and I sure as hell wasnt comfortable.
Deciding I was going to ask what's going on I turned to Karen but she appeared to be asleep with eyes closed and mouth slightly open and yet somehow she managed to look as beautiful as ever. A guy from the back with bright brown eyes winked at me when I turned back to see who was behind me actually I was looking for anyone that looked like me that looked normal. Even the girl with afro had freckles of purple in it I turned back accepting my fate I was definitely going to be a misfit I groaned at the thought.
