One: Pawn or Fate?
LUCIEN'S POV
"No," my voice thundered, they couldn't expect this of me, I had a life and I wasn't planning on uprooting it to the far south all because the supernatural council thought an all-exclusive school would strengthen ties and allies.
"Lucien," my mother's soft voice interrupted my internal monologue. I kept my eyes fixed on the floor, avoiding her crystal blue eyes, a trap she knew how to use perfectly.
"Don't tell me you want this too, Mother, they hate us, I can't be around those werewolves" I shouted, walking out of the throne room.
It was treason to walk out on the king and queen but I was their son and because they made a plan without checking with me, was enough validation for me to walk out on them.
The shuddering of the wood reverberated through the air as I slammed the door closed, my fist pounding through the reinforced wall.
I hated the power play that came with the throne, the subjection to making allies and treaties forced upon all by the supernatural council. I would have been a shitty king, lucky I came a century later after my brother. I was only the pawn, an easy piece played for the king's next action.
"Honey," my mother sighed, walking into my room. Her face showed no emotion at the hole in the wall caused by my fist.
Adriana Thaddeus, a soft-spoken vampire, with the voice of a siren, and beauty uncompared. She was the iron fist behind the throne, a great negotiator.
"I hate this idea too, I can't imagine you being far away from home surrounded by werewolves and the likes of them" she groaned, settling on the loveseat at the corner of my room.
"Don't play that game with me, Mother" I gritted out, glaring at her. Her eyes twinkled, I wasn't an easy prey and she knew this.
"What game?" She smiled, feigning ignorance.
" You know what I am talking about, I am not one of your subjects, don't play good cop with me" I retorted, walking into the bathroom.
Most times it felt like I wasn't seen more than a pawn, easily moved around for my father's political favour.
"Lucien" my mother called out, gliding slowly toward me.
"I know this isn't the best of situations, but you have to understand, this is our way of showing them that we have evolved, a chance to clear the air," her voice like a siren calmed the raging storm in my mind.
"We make choices not because we can but because we must, and someday you will understand these choices" she whispered, kissing my head.
" I know, I was made for this but sometimes I only wish I could be present, not just flowing through time" I sighed, leaning into her touch.
"You are here," she said, placing her hand on her chest.
"And forever here" she pointed to her head.
When I was a kid, I had believed my mother could use words to say dragons, and right now she had at a point I couldn't turn away from.
"It wouldn't be that bad, you get a house to stay Damien and Lavinia" Her face contorted in distaste at the mention of Lavinia.
It was obvious she couldn't stand Lavinia, I knew better than to interfere and my mother tried to keep all exchanges cordial. A queen wasn't one to hate her subjects.
"I'll think about it," I relented.
"Oh honey, it's already done," she laughed walking out of the room.
I should have known choices had been made and that I had no choice in the situation. I was only told as a formality but not for my permission.
With a sunken mood, I trudged back into the throne room, my shoulder slacked a sign of defeat. No words were needed, my face was a mask of dejection.
"Lucien" my father smiled, his eyes showing delight at my defeat. King Thaddeus was a force and with a queen like Adriana beside him, they were the power couple.
"I see you have come to your senses," he said, smiling lovingly at my mother. I wanted to whip the smug look off his face but I was defeated.
I turned my attention to my mother, "Are you happy now?" I asked, my eyes showing my pain.
Her smile faltered for a second, " yes Lucien, this a great opportunity for you" she responded.
" For me or Scott?" I asked, hating how vulnerable I sounded.
"For you, Scott, for our people and the kingdom" she responded.
" Lucien, we would never hurt you" my mother reasoned moving closer to me.
"I understand" I sighed.
"I am sure you will find Mystic Falls Academy to be an eye-opener, do not disappoint me," he said.
" Yes Father" I growled, walking out of the throne room yet again. The sentence has been made nothing could change it. I was going to Mystic Falls Academy.
The hallway echoed as my shoes stomped heavily on the ground, servants bustling in and out of my room as they packed.
"Lucien" Damien called out, his eyes wide.
" It's true, we are moving" I replied his silent question. I knew it was unfair to drag Damien across the world with me but deep down I was glad he was coming.
"Oh man, this should be exciting" He whistled. Damien was an optimist, always acting now and thinking later.
"Yeah, it should" I muttered, watching the servants move around, pretending to not be listening in on our conversations.
For one thing, I was excited to be away from the spies, I hated the times my actions were reported back to my parents.
"Let's take a walk," I said, our code for needing space to talk freely.
My mind was filled with thoughts, "This is like a test run by the supernatural council, and I am sure they are expecting us to fail" I told him.
" Then we only have to prove to them, that we are more than blood-suckers" Damien smiled.
Mystic Falls Academy, I only hoped it would be the start of something beautiful.
