The blizzard, brought on by cyclone Hudhud that descended on the Annapurna Circuit on Oct. 14th was the worst disaster ever recorded on the trail. It claimed 43 lives and stranded over two hundred heading for the pass, many of them suffering from frostbite and hypothermia. Of the 14 who had left the teahouse at Thoroung-La Pass for Mukinath along with Sherpa Kembe who went after them, only eight survived. Sherpa Kembe was found frozen two days later in the snow with one of men who had left to seek help for those left behind at the teahouse on the pass. Sherpa Kembe would later be recognized by the Nepalese authorities as a hero and was bestowed the Asian Gold Medal of Civilian Bravery posthumously for saving the lives of four trekkers.
