Several days later, I got a call from Suzanne. She had me a bit freaked out. She said she found something and needed to see me immediately.
Justin was sweet enough to take me, especially with it being this short notice. We were headed there a mere 15 minutes after she called.
The whole drive there, my nerves were on edge. I caught myself biting my nails. Had to stop myself several times. I only felt my anxiety dwindle when we got to her building.
I didn't wait for Justin to open my door. I was out and headed in. His long legs helped him to keep up.
He took a seat, and I barely got a single word out to the secretary when Suzanne came out. She took me back to her office. On her desk laid hundreds of documents.
I could see they were our bank records and other documents pertaining to our life.
"Girl, I don't know if you pray, but God loves you."
I gave her a face. I've never considered myself a lucky person, but in this moment, it seemed like I was.
"That moron put nearly everything in your name."
"Oh, that's doesn't mean anything. I had the credit to help him open his company."
"Oh no, you don't understand. He screwed the pooch on this one."
She was vibrating with excitement. I should have been excited, but instead, I was just getting more anxious.
"He didn't put all of this into your married name. He put it into your maiden name. The company and its accounts are in his name. But this moron has been paying for... Let me back up. there is a lot to tell you." She took a deep breath.
"He sold the apartment here in the city. Just outside of New York, there is a house that he purchased. Living there is his girlfriend and their twin boys. He put that house into his name. Which is fine. He can have it. His cars are in his name. Your car is in your married name. However, he has an account in your maiden name that has millions of dollars in it. There are 4 accounts. One for the business. One for your joint account. One for him and his girlfriend. And one that he has his rainy day money stashed in. Where he screwed up was, Your maiden name is on the account, and he is only an addition to the account.
So here's what's going to happen... IF this is what you want to do.... He can keep the company and its accounts. He can keep the account for him and his girlfriend. You keep the joint account, and we can take him off of the account he has in your maiden name. He keeps the house outside of New York, and you keep the other one. You call to keep your own vehicles."
She took a moment to allow me to respond.
"I think that's fair."
"I do need to warn you. I've looked over David's business documents. He isn't making very intelligent good choices."
I frowned at her. "What does that mean?"
"His investors are some very bad people. Everybody knows not to accept money from the Romano family. They don't have legal business practices. From what I can tell, he owes them a lot of money."
"How does that affect me?" My heart was beating a thound miles an hour.
"They may come after you."
"Even if we get divorced?"
"That's less likely. It just means we need to get yall divorced faster."
"I mean, that's fine by me."
"I will draw up the documents. He will be served next Monday. Keep Justin close and be careful who you trust."
I nodded and headed out. I was silent until we got into the car. I didn't want anyone to hear anything I was about to say. As soon as we were driving down the road, I spilled everything. Poured my heart out. Justin was shocked at the information that was discovered.
"Same bank?" He asked. I was confused by his question but remembered that I needed to take David off my maiden name account.
Walking in, Justin accompanied me.
We met with one of the reps, and they helped me to take David off. They did it without hesitation or argument. I also put a warning on my account that no one but I was allowed to access that account. If I sent someone, they had to have a password.
After we got done, Justin and I left.
"You had no idea he was working with the Romano's?"
I looked at him in disbelief.
"No, I believe in doing things the right way. Honestly, I'm hurt you would think I'd participate in such practices. There are many things I don't know about David, apparently."
I looked out the window. Justin's question hurt me more than I wanted to admit. I thought he knew me by now.
The rest of the car ride was in silence. Justin's words had hurt, and I was trying not to dwell on them. I needed to clear my mind and prepare for the battle that was about to ensue. David was going to flip his lid. His little house b***h wasn't taking s**t anymore.
The anxiety of not knowing if David was going to show up or not was nerve-wracking. I hated every second of it.
I desperately wanted to call my mother in law, but I didn't want her to know. She might tell David. If she didn't already know.
The next few days were hell. I wasn't sleeping well, and to be honest, I will still pissed at Justin.
He was trying really hard to win my good graces again, but I wasn't having it. I knew some of my anger towards David was being taken out on Justin, which isn't fair, but I was struggling with it all.
Everyone was beginning to look like an enemy.
I was struggling with sleep. I desperately wanted Justin to stay in my bed, but I knew if I did that, I was no better than David. Running to someone else's arms. I needed to prove to myself that I could do this.
