"How was work, my love?" I asked as I put his things down.
"Just another day." He didn't sound like he was involved in the conversation. Instead, he sounded like a robot.
In silence, I catered to David as he went to the buffet and got a glass out. Pouring a glass of amber liquid and then taking it down in one gulp.
Pushing his lips together in a fine line. Something was bothering him. I contemplated whether or not to ask. In the end, I decided to talk with him.
"Things are going well with the body guard. He is very helpful." I tried keeping things light-hearted.
"Good. He's going to cost us a lot of money."
It wasn't the response I was hoping for.
"You are tired. I will get a shower ready."
As I exited the room, Justin came around the corner. He looked at me and gave me a smile. It was a warm and welcoming sight.
"David is home." I pointed out.
"If I may, I will be retiring to my room."
I gave him a quick nod in response.
Continuing with my task, I got the shower going at just the right temperature, laid out a fresh towel, and set out a pair of fleece pajamas.
As I exited the bathroom, David came walking into the room.
"Your shower is ready."
"Good."
He went straight to the shower. While I headed back to my room, I thought maybe, just maybe, I would get a night with my husband. It had been so long since we had been together. That's why Justin's presence was setting my body on edge.
Entering my room, I got into my silk night gown. It left nearly nothing to the imagination. It was a beautiful dark red. It shimmered in the light. Getting on my robe, I went back over to David.
By the time I entered his room, he was finishing up the shower. I could hear the water being shut off, followed by the sounds of him shuffling around the bathroom.
He exited the bathroom but didn't show any excitement in my lack of clothing. I had taken my robe off and was sitting on the bed.
"Not tonight, dear. I am exhausted." His words doused my like cold water.
"Honey, it's been so long." I complained.
"Maybe tomorrow?" He seemed unsure of his question.
"Will you be home?" I asked with trepidation.
"I will be home, but then I have to be gone for a few days." He answered seemed half hearted.
I could tell I wasn't going to win this one.
With my remaining pride, I exited the room. My robe was ticked tightly around me. I fought the tears, brimming my eyes. This always made me feel horrible. I hated every time he rejected my advances.
Quietly shutting my door, I lay on my bed. Curling up, I allowed the tears to silently fall down onto my pillow. I kept my sobs quiet. Justin didn't need to hear the sadness I felt. And some imberrassment.
I allowed myself to cry for a moment before drifting off to sleep. There, my dreams were light and jolly.
I woke to my alarm ringing loud into the dusk sky. The window had been left open and caused a chill on the air. Completing my usual morning tasks, I was quickly downstairs helping Mrs. Murray with breakfast. David wouldn't be up for a few more hours. When he was home, it was rare for him to be awake as early as me.
Mrs. Murray entered the kitchen with several bags. We were in need of some supplies. It wasn't unusual for her to stop by the small corner store just 15 minutes away.
We started on the omelets. I was in the midst of chopping up the green bell peppers, red bell pepper, and onions when Justin came walking into the room. He gave each of us a cheerful greeting before making himself busy by making freshly squeezed orange juice.
We all made light conversations as we made breakfast. Mrs. Murray was cooking while I set the table, and Justin finished the orange juice.
By the time I finished, Mrs. Murray was ready with fresh omelets. Justin was bringing out 4 tall glasses.
The sounds of David's footsteps came from their stairwell. They quickly descended the stairs and walked across the foye.
He took a seat at the head of the table as he always does. When David was home, staff weren't allowed to eat with them. However, I was making a change to that starting today. Mrs. Murray worried, but I tried to calm her fears
He looked around the table and didn't say a word. I was pretty surprised, to say the least. I was sure there would be some objections, but instead, our meal was peaceful.
David was busy looking at paperwork while I talked with Justin and Mrs. Murray.
He finished his food and abruptly stood. Giving me a kiss on the head, he was swiftly out the door. Not a word spoken from his lips.
"Well, he's a fascinating creature." Justin teased.
"He's just deep in thought." I looked up at him.
His brows drew into a frown. "Why does it look like you were crying?"
it took me a second, but I realized my eyes were probably puffy from my cry fest last night.
"I wasn't. I'm perfectly fine." I lied.
Justin shrugged his shoulders and moved onto cleaning the table off. All of us having finished our meal, I left to go to my office. I had a few things I wanted to work on. Had to keep busy while I waited to see if David was going to come home this time. I was hopeful, but careful.
Busying myself with work, time went by quickly. Enya played on the speaker located near my desk. Her melodies always helped me to keep my mind busy.
Looked at the window occasionally, I could see Justin busy helping Mrs. Murray. I'm thankful she had help. She was busy telling him stories of her life. She had to be delighted that she had new ears to tell her stories to.
