The Hunt

833 Words
“Cmon Jensy, find him!” a male voice yelled through the trees. “Quiet, Gunner, He may still be alive.” Jensen Jones crept through the woods ,looking for the ten point buck her father just shot with his high powered rifle. She and her trusty bloodhound Roxy were the best trackers in the Smoky Mountains, or perhaps all of Tennessee. It was the first day of Hunting season, and her dad had obtained permission to hunt on a friend’s private land. Him,and his twins ,Gunner and Jensen ,did this every year, with Gunnar spotting for him. Graham, their father, usually took the shot with Jensy standing point to take the second shot, and track the deer if needed. He had taken his shot, aiming the 30 06 at the heart ,but the buck spooked and Graham shot him in the shoulder instead. Jensy bent down, petting her big bloodhound, whispering in her ear ,”Quiet girl, we have to be very quiet.” A man stepped into view just as the bullet whizzed by his head. The deer, spooked by the deafening gunshot ,attempted to run, but her father cut him off, shooting him in the head .The man stood there, amidst the ensuing chaos, watching as the twins’ father slit the buck’s throat, putting the creature out of its misery. “What the f**k?” he yelled ,as Gunner, Roxy, and Jensen stepped into the clearing. “Um, sorry,” Jensen approached him ,with her head lowered in submission. Their father, who just realized what had happened, left the bloodied deer to approach them. “What do you mean, sorry,” he turned his head to the them, “You almost f*****g killed me,”  Connor Evans observed the person addressing him, a small young woman stood before him, shaking. With her blaze orange camo, black coke bottle glasses and small frame, she seemed totally out of place ,out here in the woods. He immediately took notice of her ,unkempt brows and disheveled hair, pulled up in her cap. “Well gee, aren’t you a pretty sight,” he mocked, rolling his eyes .His first day back, after eight years, and he is nearly murdered by an ugly girl. “I knew I should never have come back to this Godforsaken town,” he muttered ,as his would -be killers approached him. “Connor ,is that you?” a familiar voice came from behind him. He whipped around ,his strong aura threatening everyone. “Graham?”  “Hey ,good to see you back in town,” the older man stepped to him ,placing a hand on his shoulder. ”What are you doing out here in the woods during hunting season?” “Well it is my land,” he snapped ,”and I have every right to be here ,but the bigger question is why did your ugly daughter try to kill me? He glared at the young girl, who looked nervously at the forest floor. “Whoa,” the older man held up a hand, “Your father gave us permission, and Jensen couldn’t have done this,” Graham huffed ,giving a sideways glance at his children. Gunner stayed silent ,standing there with his hands in his pocket, nervously shuffling his feet. “Did you not hear the bullet whizz by my head,” Connor waved his hands in the air to emphasize the point. “It was me, daddy,” Jensen’s small voice wafted through the air, ”I took the shot as he stepped in the clearing.” “Jensy,” Graham eyed his daughter warily,” You never miss.” “Well, there’s a first time for everything ,and this was my fault.” For the first time ,her eyes wandered up,to get a good look at the man her brother almost killed. At around six foot four, the man towered over her, giving her a deathly glare. His dark brown hair was shaved on the sides, and fashioned in a short mohawk on talk. With a perfectly manicured goatee and mustache, and his forest green eyes, this man was utterly handsome. His jeans and black t-shirt gripped his toned body, and underneath she could make out the cut of his defined abs. The angry man just happened to be the sexiest, most gorgeous specimen of a man she had ever laid eyes on. Too bad it didn’t matter, Jensen thought for once. He would never be attracted to an ugly person such as herself, and he would never get near her even if he was. “I apologize, sir.” she stuttered, “I really am sorry, I didn’t see you.” “I will be having a talk with my father about this,” he growled again, turning to Graham,” And you need to keep that thing on a damn leash!” he pointed to Jensen ,then stomped off ,back through the woods in the direction from which he came. Through all of this, Roxy kept quiet, sitting at her master’s side ,wagging her tail. “Just leave the deer,” her father waved ,”We better get outta here before the alpha gets wind of this. tomorrow, I will have a talk with him ,and straighten this mess out.” “Thanks ,Jensy,” her brother whispered, as they trotted through the forest.” That guy was totally pissed ,he would have killed me.” “It’s nothing,” she smiled at her brother,”Besides ,you are my twin ,I couldn’t survive if you died.”
