Chapter Three

BLAIR She was hiding something, I was sure of it. I saw the way she jumped and tried to hide something from me when I sneaked up behind her. But why? It didn't make sense to me. Now I looked at my partner next to me, she was sleeping with a small blade next to her. From experience, I had realized she was a light sleeper and now that she was a Huntress, she could quickly reach for the blade and defend herself if she needed to. No matter how intrigued I was by what she hid, I hoped she would tell me, for some reason I believed it was important. It was now 2am, we were still parked close to the abandoned building since we didn't know where else to look for the brothers. I saw from the corner of my eye as Sky began to stir awake. She yawned slowly and stretched before opening her eyes. "You can sleep now, Blair, I'm awake." I chuckled and said, "I'm aware." I walked to the second row of seats of the truck and got it before laying down on the somewhat hard, textile seats. The last thing I saw before falling asleep was Sky taking out whatever she was hiding, along with a flashlight. ... I yawned and opened my eyes to see the sky was clear and the sun was rising. I looked over to where Sky has been sitting and found her missing. I looked around but didn't see any sign of her. I got out of the truck and began to walk a bit; my muscles were numb from the way I had slept. I looked at my watch and it read, 8:00am. I sighed, only 6 hours of sleep, great! I heard some rustling in the trees to my left and I quickly reached for my gun, yes, I do sleep with my gun. I reloaded and took out the lock in a second. What? Did you think I was crazy enough to sleep with a loaded gun, not so much. Back at the trees the sound of footsteps was getting louder and I pointed my gun, waiting for an appearance. A second later, Sky came out of the forest and raised her hands teasingly while she smiled. "I come in peace I promise, and I even brought a peace offering," she said before putting two rabbits on the back of the truck. I rolled my eyes and put the gun away. "You could have woken me up," I said once the logs for the fire were in place. Sky shrugged, "you let me sleep almost 6 hours, you deserved to sleep as much. Besides, everything was calm, and I was getting bored and restless." I groaned but nodded. "You know we could have gone back into the city for breakfast, right? We do have money." Sky shrugged and walked past me as she neared the burnt building. "I know, but we also know how to hunt and cook. I'm sure there must be a pot or a frying pan laying around in there. You start the fire, I'll be right back," she said as she ran into the building and I sighed. Rabbits for breakfast it is. Quickly, I took out a few pieces of wood laying around and some smaller pieces of the burnt house to make a fire. With some matches I lit up the campfire. Sky still was inside so I began skinning the rabbits. I tried to do it as fast as I could to avoid feeling sorrow for those two little lives. "Look what I found!" yelled Skylar as she ran towards me. I turned around and saw that she had indeed found a frying pan and something else that was wrapped in a colorful way. "What is that?" I asked unsure and a bit alert. Sky sat down next to me and smiled, "it's dessert." She took the two objects and hid them behind her, so I wouldn't be able to see. I rolled my eyes and nodded as I began placing the skinned rabbits in the frying pan. After a while of waiting, the rabbits were cooked enough to eat and Sky and I each took one. It was a meal of silence, Sky looked like she was debating something and lost in profound thought and I, I was thinking about how much I would love to stop being a Huntress. "You done?" asked Sky after a few minutes. I nodded, and she smiled before handing me a chocolate bar. "Wait, you found this in there?" I asked confused as I pointed to the building. Sky nodded and scrunched her eyebrows together, confused. "Yes, what's wrong with that?" I looked at the chocolate in my hand then back at her, "these should have been melted in the fire, yet they look perfectly intact." Sky shook her head, "so? Maybe the fire didn't reach them, besides the temperature isn't too hot for them to melt." I got up, "but my hand is, and so is this fire," I said before throwing the chocolate bar into the fire. Sky's expression changed to shock and mine did too, between all of the flames, the wrapped chocolate bar was still perfectly intact. "I'm amazed," I said out loud and Sky nodded. "Yeah me too, I really thought they were real." I looked at her and crossed my arms, "I'm not amazed that the chocolate didn't melt, I'm amazed that you, the brightest Huntress at camp, didn't figure it out." Sky bowed her head ashamed, "I-I don't know what to say, I have a lot going on in my mind. But I also wanted to see if there was a spark of excitement when you did something Huntress-like." I sighed, and I frowned, "and was there?" Sky shook her head, "nothing." I knelt down in front of her, "that's because this is not the life I want." My friend nodded and didn't say anything else as she looked at the forest. "A witch put a spell on those chocolates, her name is Lucinda LaRue," she murmured before looking at me. "How do you know this? I mean, the part about the witch is obvious but how do you know her name?” I looked at my friend in dismay. She sighed and turned back to me, "Blair I need to tell you something." Before she could say anything else, the Building exploded and knocked us down. Wood flew all around us and I turned away so none of them managed to hit me on the face. When it was over, I looked at my partner with wide eyes, she looked astonished. "We have to get out of here, she knows we are here," she said before getting up and putting out the fire. "Where do we go?" I asked and for once she looked unsure. "I think my aunt is at work right now, we could come up with a plan before she leaves work," she suggested, and I nodded. Normally I would have preferred to avoid any contact with a Huntress' past but right now we didn't know where to go. Sky was the one who drove this time. We were both still overwhelmed by what had happened a few moments before. It had all happened so fast. But the curiosity was still making me restless, what had Skylar wanted to tell me? "Sky, what was it that you wanted to tell me back there?" I asked slowly and unsure. Did I really want to know how she knew? Did she know the witch? Did she know how she worked? Or was someone else helping her from the outside? Did it have something to do with what she was hiding? "I-I don't know where to begin," she said and then I heard her sigh. "Yesterday I found an envelope with my name on it inside the house and-" she stopped talking and driving. We had reached her aunt's house and apparently, it was not empty. From the house, I saw a young woman step out and walk towards her car. She looked at us and her eyes widened as her face expressed how perplexed she felt. She cautiously walked over to our vehicle and said, "Ana?" Sky closed her eyes and murmured, "Dammit." Then she looked at the girl and said, "hello Melissa, it has been a long time." The girl, Melissa, was still staring at Sky, "we need to talk."
