The thought of being parted from Sejanus was unbearable. I lived for that man; I could not imagine life without him. As soon as I could I went to see him and told him the news. I begged him to find a way to rescind the decision. “Surely you can help me,” I pleased. “You are the most powerful man at court.” Sejanus’s face darkened. “Things are changing,” he said. “The ground is shifting even as we speak.” He went on to mutter about plots, scheming factions at court, the uncertainties of political life. About such things I knew nothing, only that my world was falling apart. I threw myself to the ground and wrapped my arms around Sejanus’s feet. “I belong to you, you are my master,” I cried.
