"So, why didn't you just tell him you didn't want to go bowling? I'm sure he would have understood!"
Myself and Brianna were lounging on her double bed in our pyjamas, finally having some overly-anticipated girl time that I hadn't realised I needed until now. I was just so good to sit and chat with her. It almost felt like no time had passed since we last did this.
"C, we've only just started dating! I didn't want him to think I was too precious to throw a bowling ball!"
"Bri, you ARE too precious to throw a bowling ball!" Her face screwed up in amusement as she reached across from her and threw the nearest pillow at me.
"Hey!" I giggled my words out as I blocked my face from the fluffy cushion flew towards my face.
"You are such a biatch!"
"Just, finish painting my toenails, slave!" I watched as my toes turned into a mixture of colours, admiring Brianna's handy work. We always did this when we had a sleepover. We would paint each finger and toe a different colour nail varnish after our obligatory sleepover face masks.
"Ohh, you look so pwetty!" Brianna's high-pitched baby voice mumbled up from the bottom of the bed as she waved her hand over the top of my feet, as if doing so would make the nail varnish dry faster.
"Owh, fank you!" This was literally coming off the second I got home in the morning.
"Ugh, can we go and get some more brownies? They were soooo gooood!"
"I was just thinking the same thing!" I carefully shuffled off the plush bed and we wandered down to her extravagant kitchen.
******
In a house so grand, they definitely had designed this place around themselves rather than in keeping with the age of the property. While the white marble countertops made the kitchen feel hard and resilient, all the cabinets were a dark walnut colour, which made the space feel warm and homely. All the drawers and cabinets were adorned with chrome handles, and the appliances were also host to chrome nobs and buttons. Cooking in here earlier had been a delight! The room was soo big, unlike my kitchen at home, that me and Bri had managed to create out brownies without stepping on each other's toes. The island in the middle of the kitchen sat beneath a low hanging shelving unit, littered with well-positioned spotlights, and I parked my arse on one of the fabric bar stools that sat nestled underneath the counter. The brownies were piled high on each other on a large white place, and my mouth salivated at the anticipation of tasting the chocolatey goodness that I was about to gorge on. My fingers slithered around one towards the top of the pile as my tongue danced across my lips. I slowly pulled it towards myself and nearly had it in my mouth, until a loud banging came from the side door leading directly out to the driveway.
"Ughh, Jesus!" My hand flew to my chest, trying to comfort my elevated heartbeat! It was dark outside, and I just didn't need a scare before feasting on my evening snack, although I was grateful that I hadn't already been eating! I don't think Bri knew the Heimlich manoeuvre!
Brianna, who had been leaning over one of the countertops on her phone, didn't even flinch. It was almost like this was a regular occurrence for her, to have someone beating on the back door in the dead of night! With the number of boyfriends she has had, I suspect this is how she saw them after her parents had gone to bed, which then had me thinking.
'Cade?'
Bri bounced over to the door and quickly pulled in a very casual looking Cade, who was dressed in a pair of straight-leg jeans, green t-shirt and black trainers. His hair was all ruffled and damp, and the dark patches on his shoulders confirmed that it was drizzling outside.
"Babe, you don't have to bang so loudly on the door when you come over. I think you nearly gave Claire a stroke!" Her eyes turned to me as she laughed, "I swear I almost saw your brownie fly across the room!" Her laugh was so full of happiness, and it made me realise that she never laughed this way at school. She seemed so relaxed; maybe she needed this night too.
"You seem happy!" Cade's voice filled my ears and made my legs almost melt. Thank god I was sat down right now!
"Do I?" Bri almost seemed shocked, "I am always happy!"
"Yeah, but not like this. Not with me." Oh, I felt for him. I knew what it was like to not feel like you were enough for somebody.
"Maybe it's because my girl is here! Hey, you need to try one of these brownies! C made them!" Cade's eyes fell onto my face and I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks. Those same eyes I had imagined looking at me through the steamy water of my shower, this morning. Just remembering the images that I had conjured in my head earlier were enough to make me tremble with longing.
Brianna pulled Cade towards the island where the brownies lay, and I slowly took the first bite of my own brownie as Bri took one and placed it between Cades luring thin lips. I just stared at his face, taking in all his features as if I was admiring a painting in an art gallery. The way his skin looked under the kitchen lights. His strong eyebrows. His high cheekbones. His piercing green eyes. I blinked when I was taken aback by my own thoughts. How did I never notice how beautiful his eyes were? Sure, I guess the muscles kept me preoccupied for a while, but his eyes held something deep within them. It reminded me of a thick forest on a cloudy day. I moved up from my chair as he smiled down at Brianna next to him.
"Mmmm, this is good!" His mumbled words dodged the crumbling brownie that was dancing in his mouth. I wandered to the cabinet and grabbed myself a glass, before heading to the sink and filling it with water. I turned and lent my back against the countertop, and suddenly found myself looking at Cade, once again.
'This boy got me thirsty!'
"Oh, wait right here! I have something upstairs for you!" Bri wandered out of the kitchen which granted me Cades full attention. I was suddenly alone with Cade. I felt awkward after thinking of him the way I did earlier, and the expectant gaze he was giving me, was strong enough to plant my feet in place, unable to move. I had to try and break the silence.
"Soooo, how was your evening with Bri yesterday? You know she hates bowling, right?" His eyes creased at the edges as he smiled brightly at me.
"I did have my suspicions! She spent more time on her phone than bowling!"
"Oh, well, next time, you can take me as well! I'll give you a run for your money!"
"Oh, really?" His eyes flashed with something that made my stomach flip. He grazed his hand through his sandy-brown hair and I couldn't help but stare. God, he is so gorgeous! I'm not surprised Bri managed to grab his attention though, she is stunning, but what I wouldn't give to have had a chance to ride his...
"See something you like?" His deep voice pulled me from my thoughts. The heat rose in my cheeks again, and I knew I was blushing.
'Speak for god sake! Say something! I bet you look like a right i***t stood there drooling all over your chin!'
"I was just thinking about.... bananas?" His eyes widened at my words and he let out a full belly laugh, and I cracked a small, yet embarrassed smile.
'Great job girl! You really know how to peek a guy’s interest!'
"You really are strange sometimes Claire!"
'Oh god! How humiliating!'
"You're lucky I already like you." I looked up slowly through my eyelashes, the humour was gone from his face.
"What?"
The tension between us was growing, and I could feel my body reacting to his penetrating stare.
'Oh Brianna! Please hurry up before I end up jumping your man!'
The urge to take him was tormenting! My breathing changed, and I clamped my thighs together, trying to hold in the desire that was slowly starting to mix with the fabric of my pyjama shorts. His eyes drifted down to my chest and he c****d his head slightly, as if imagining taking my breast in his mouth.
"You're not wearing any underwear." My eyes closed gently, as his smooth, low voice washed over me. His observations were right, and I knew my n*****s were reacting to him; slightly peeking through my thin top.
The whole time we were alone, neither of us moved. He didn't try and approach me, and I didn't take a step towards him. I knew it would be a massive mistake to let myself drift to his embrace, and that is assuming he wanted to touch me. I didn't notice his body change like mine did. There was no excitement in his jeans. His breathing remained the same. His hands had not moved from his front jean pockets. I was so relieved, and agitated when Bri skipped into the kitchen. Cade's eyes freed me from my mental constraints, and I headed straight out of the room towards Brianna's bedroom.
I didn't hang around long enough to find out what the hell Bri gave him.
******
"C, are you ok? Did Cade upset you or something?" I was under the duvet on my phone when Bri came back to her room.
"No, I just thought I should give you both some space." Bri climbed under the covers and scorched in closer to me.
"You know, Cade said there is a party next Friday at one of his friend's places. Probably one of the guys from the football team. Wanna go?"
"Ugh, hell yes!" If there was any way I could get my leg over someone and satisfy this burning desire to f**k Cade, I was all in!
"Good! You can come here to get ready, and Cade said he would pick us up. I, personally, need a good drink and a chance to let my hair down."
"Me too!" Bri flicked the television on in her room, and we both turned out the lights and snuggled under the covers and watched the pictures dance across the screen. We both fell asleep, full of brownie, and satisfied. Well, almost!
