I should have known that a bunch of my peers would be here at this hour. I'm just not used to it, as whenever I stop here, it's always early in the morning with the elderly or adults rushing to get to work.
Walking up to Lucy, she gives a huge smile. Even with a swarm of people lining up, she is patient with me. She writes down an order and shows me where and how to enter it into the cash register. This is the easy part, and I quickly learn how to do so. Despite the groans from some of the impatient high schoolers, Lucy always kept a positive attitude and smile on her face. I could really learn something from this woman.
Once the line disappears and the customers have either taken a seat or their order to go, I sigh in relief.
"Kylie, you are quite a quick learner."
I give Lucy a small smile, "Thank you." I then ask her a question that I haven't figured out yet. "Are you genuinely this happy or do you fake a smile?" I made sure to ask quietly so that none of the others in the bakery heard.
She places a hand on my shoulder, "Walk with me." As we head back into the kitchen, she tells Cameron to watch the counter. Giving a salute to his mom, he gives me a flirtatious smirk and wink as he passes us.
"I can tell that you're uncomfortable around people your age. When it came to the adults and elderly, you actually looked up at them when they were placing their orders. I remember what high school was and how intimidating some of my peers were to others. I wasn't popular, but I also wasn't the quiet type."
"Mom, just get to the point." Brandon snickers from the kitchen counter he's working at.
"Oh, hush you," Lucy replies in a joking manner.
"My point is, I didn't let others define who I am. Don't let others intimidate you, my dear. If you do, then you won't be able to achieve in whatever career you decide to pursue after graduation. You need to stand up for yourself and that includes killing with kindness. Do you really think I like some of those cocky-ass teens? Of course not, but I need their business."
Well, that answers my question.
"Thank you, Lucy. That truly helps a lot and explains why you don't have Brandon running the counter." She lets out a loud laugh and I see a hint of a smirk on Brandon as he looks over at me briefly.
"As I said before, you learn quickly!"
The next few hours fly by after returning to the counter with Lucy. I considered what she said and tried my best to look at each customer that ordered. Not going to lie, I did look down a few times with certain people, but I did much better than earlier.
After the last customer leaves, Lucy locks the entrance and flips the sign to closed.
Brandon and Cameron join me and Lucy up front. "So, be honest, how did you like your first day? Will we be seeing you again tomorrow," Cameron asks.
I take a seat at one of the tables, and the other three follow me.
"I was nervous at first, but you guys are very kind and patient with me. I think I can even overcome anti-social skills by working here. So, yes, I will be staying."
"In that case, I think we should exchange numbers. For work reasons, of course." Before I even respond, Cameron has his phone out and hands it to me. Brandon rolls his eyes and I stifle my laugh.
Typing my number in, I hand the phone back to him.
"Okay, it's been a long day. Let's clean up and go home." Lucy lets out a dramatic yawn as she stands up.
"Go home, mom. We can handle closing up, especially now that we have an extra set of hands." I truly admire the relationship these two men have with their mother. Brandon has no problem taking charge and being concerned for Lucy.
"How could I say no to that? Kylie, I look forward to seeing you tomorrow. Have a goodnight."
After we say goodnight to her, Brandon locks the door back up after he makes sure she gets to her car safely.
Cameron hands me disinfecting spray and a washcloth. As I wipe down the tables, he begins sweeping the floor.
"So, can I ask you a personal question?"
I stop wiping the table and look at Cameron. "Sure."
"Why do you hate everyone in school? What did they do to you? You have to have some friends, right?"
"That's more than one question," I jokingly state.
I expected a small laugh or a smirk, but Cameron is looking at me with a serious expression.
"Why can't you just leave Kylie alone?" Brandon strolls out of the kitchen with a scowl.
"You don't have to answer him."
"I-uh- it's okay. It actually feels good to have someone to talk with that doesn't see me as invisible or a freak."
"What do you mean? Who could ever think that of you?"
Brandon almost sounds angry and I don't know why.
"Sorry, I'm overstepping. It's none of our business. I'll let you finish cleaning up out here."
I don't know what came over me, but I quickly grab him by the wrist as he turned to go back to the kitchen.
His eyes widen in surprise as they connect with mine. I quickly let go of his wrist and apologize.
"There's nothing to be sorry about. Please, talk to us." Brandon leads me to the table we were at before and Cameron follows.
"Kylie, we want to be more than just your co-workers, we want to be your friend." Cameron's words hit me in the heart and I begin to cry.
