(Zephyr POV)
Everything between us is nothing but an act. Yet when he smiles and laughs, when he talks to me, when he helps me cut my meat, I can’t help but feel beyond happiness.
"Will you be alright?" my mate asked as I nodded my head.
Alright with what? I didn't hear anything he said, since I was lost in my stupid thoughts!
"Ok. Then, after dinner, you can go get some rest. I will take my leave"
I frowned as my mate stood up. I froze as he took a step towards me, grabbing my hand before kissing the back of it. "Until then"
Even after he left the room, I just sat there staring at my hand. I could still feel the tingling feeling in my hand.
"Who would have thought" a voice rose as I turned to my team. I raised one eyebrow at the two. While Jasper was giving me a knowing look, the trainee girl was busy staring at the soup with a small smile.
"What is it?"
"Nothing, 'mate'. It's just that you are blushing."
The moment he said that, my hands went over my cheeks as I slightly slapped them, wanting to stop the embarrassment.
"I..." I stopped as I knew reasoning with him would only put me into a worse situation.
"What is your name?" I looked at the girl instead. Her head snapped at me, surprised before sitting straight.
"Beckie, Sir! Huge fan of yours and always wanted to be in your team! Please take care of me"
I nodded my head at the excited girl. "Let's see how it goes."
Surely Jasper saw something great in this woman or else he would never choose her to accompany us, but no matter what, I always needed to see it myself.
"Anyways, we should always be on guard. Be around the king every single time and make sure he is safe. Tomorrow wake up early so we can accompany them"
When I finished, both of them were looking at me with a frown.
"What?"
"I knew you had a little crush on the king, but to think your crush would go to the extent of making you deaf"
I glared at Jasper. I had always hated his jokes. It's sad that the team compatibility between us is the highest or else I would not have been stuck with him.
"The king is going on a visit to the neighbouring pack early in the morning and will only come back in the evening"
"What?!"
"Yes. I was shocked when you nodded and agreed instead of tagging along"
"We can't let that happen!" I whispered shouted as I noticed the guards moving a bit towards us. I glanced at them, as suspicion filled me.
"We finished eating, right? Let's go" I said as they nodded, understanding what I meant. But our plan to talk along the way went down the drain as the guards decided to follow us.
"We are fine. We can go on our own", Beckie, voiced, irritated, said, but the guards refused.
"Its disrespect to the future queen and her dear guest"
I didn't like this guard and so didn't my team.
"Then we will meet tomorrow. I am tired and I will go to bed. I hope no one will disturb me". I gave my team a nod before walking to my room. One of the guards was behind me, a bit closer to my liking.
"Would you mind keeping a distance?" I stopped and turned to look at him with a raised eyebrow.
The man stared at me for a few seconds before taking a step back. A small step, if I might add.
"Thank you for escorting me to my quarters. Now there is no need, since you are forbidden to enter."
One thing I love about the headquarters as of now is the fact that no men are allowed to set foot and that means they are no longer allowed to enter.
The guard didn't seem happy and was very disrespectful as he didn't do anything but walk away.
"I will keep an eye on you, you asshole", I whispered under my breath before entering my room. But I was surprised when I was welcomed by two maids holding a dress.
"Shall we prepare you for bed?"
I could only nod before they dragged me to the bathroom. They bathed me once again, before helping me into a white nightdress. Then I was dragged to the dressing table where they did some night routine to refresh my face and tied my hair into a loose braid.
"Are you sleepy, Lady? Or would you like to stay awake and do something?"
"No! I am sleepy!" I jumped in, shocking them.
"Oh yes. My lady must be tired from the long trip."
I was glad when they allowed me to sleep, but it was not before checking again and again if I needed anything.
"Since I have always slept alone I would really like to lock my door. I hope you don't mind."
The uncomfortable looks in the faces of the maids were clear but none of them went against my request. As I locked the door, I immediately went to the window and opened the door.
I shivered at the cold wind that blew inside. But the cold was nothing compared to the ones I experienced before on my missions.
So, without a second thought, I jumped out of the window, landing in the palace sunshade. Andrew had already given me a layout of the place, so I knew exactly where he was. I jumped down the balcony, hiding behind the curtain so the person living in that room didn't see me. I then moved to the left and once again climbed to the next sunshade. Honestly, it took more than 15 minutes to do the task since there were many guards and the king's room at the other far end.
Reaching the room, I sighed at my success before looking inside. The light was still on and I could see he was still awake and talking to his vizier.
"Are you sure?"
"It is worth a try."
"Your majesty. Maybe you should accept the reality and move on."
Andrew let out a loud angry growl that even sent fear down my spine.
"I am sorry!" the latter cowered in fear, taking a step back.
"Sean, you know how important it is to me. I need to find her."
My curiosity perked at the mention of finding someone. Who is she? Jealousy filled inside me as my hand gripped the beam tighter.
"We don't even know what she looked like."
"Sean, I told you to not get involved in this matter and just do what I say. Tomorrow we will go to that pack, confirm if it's her and return. It's simple. You may leave."
Sean looked distressed as he bowed and walked out.
When the man locked the door, I walked out and tapped on the balcony window. Andrew became alert as he summoned his sword and turned to me.
"You," he frowned before walking,, to me. As he opened the door, I walked inside with a sigh.
"What are you doing and wearing something like that!" I noticed a blush in his face as he looked away. He walked to his wardrobe and took out a coat before putting it over my shoulder. "Don't casually go out wearing such a thin dress."
I only nodded my head, pulling the coat closer to me. Even though it was washed, it had its alluring scent and it made me calm.
"Sorry to come here like this, your majesty, but we need to talk."
He raised one eyebrow at me but gestured me to sit on the sofa.
"Yes?" he said, sitting down. His previous caring behaviour changed as he put a distance between us.
That hurts.
"About tomorrow morning. I can't let you go alone."
"I am fine and there will be protection. I won't be alone"
"I am afraid that is not possible. I understand you have guards, but you had guards even when you hired us. Please understand"
Andrew was silent for a few seconds as he stared right into my eyes.
"Fine. But you can't come. Maybe that partner of yours, Jasper." I wasn't pleased I couldn’t come. What could possibly be the case to ignore me? He said she was going to meet some girl. Who is she and why is she so important to him?
Important than his mate.
I stood up, taking a deep breath.
"Fine. I will notify Jasper to accompany you."
"Thank you."
I paused on the spot, my eyes roaming around his room. Unlike the palace, his room was a bit too plain. It didn't fit the picture of the luxurious palace.
"Is there anything else you want help with?" he asked as my attention went to him. For some reason, he looked stressed and there were tired bags under his eyes.
"No, nothing. Get some sleep. You look like a walking dead"
Andrew lets out a short laugh at my comment.
"Thanks for pointing it out."
I smiled at him but I couldn’t help looking at him in worry. There was something bothering him and it had something to do with tomorrow.
But I am not someone who is able to ask him what happened.
"Then I will see you tomorrow" I bowed in respect before walking to the balcony. I jumped to the rail of the balcony, feeling the déjà vu from my childhood. I couldn’t help but chuckle.
"Wait!" my mate called before I could jump down. He looked at me with wide surprised eyes. It was as if he had seen some ghost.
He stared at me for a few more seconds before taking a few steps towards me. I froze as his hands went to my face, cupping my cheeks.
But then he frowned and extracted his hands back.
"Nothing. Go"
I was shocked by his reaction and couldn’t even move. He avoided my gaze, smacking the side of his head and muttering something.
"Good night" he mumbled to me before walking inside. He didn't even spare me a glance as he locked the door and closed the curtain.
Minutes passed as I stared at the curtains, my heart feeling heavy. Tears rolled down my eyes and I quickly wiped them, looking away.
"Don't cry", I scolded myself before making my way to my room.
Once I entered the room, I took the court off my shoulder and looked at it for a few more seconds. I didn't know what came into my mind, but I lay on the bed using the coat as my blanket. The warmth and the feeling of it made me feel at ease and it was like it lulled me to sleep.
