« Seff »
Four days into summer and I was already wishing for it to be over. Sad, but true. My father had been pushing me more than usual and I had yet to have any time to myself.
“Have you decided what you want me to make yet?” my mother, Gwen, asked as she looked over her shoulder at me. I pushed the scrambled eggs around on my plate as I thought about it.
“I don’t know, mom,” I finally said as I pushed the plate away from me. “Dad said that I am going to be hungry, and I am not sure what that means entirely, but maybe something filling?”
“How about lasagna?” she suggested, and I nodded before I stood up. It was not even six am yet and I was already tired. “Why don’t you go for a run before your father comes back?” I hummed out at that and went back up to my room to put on my sneakers before I headed out. The pack had been busy the last few days, preparing for my birthday, preparing for the celebration, and, of course, dealing with Robin and her father. Just last night, I had woken up to my father yelling at Gavin for not controlling his daughter and I knew that I would find out exactly what had happened at this morning's meeting. I ran along the trail, and I wasn’t at all surprised when Decker joined me. Luca, I knew, would be with his father at the training grounds not that it would make much of a difference. Decker was angry at Luca, and I still wasn’t sure why. We ran along the trail in silence, although I could hear the music coming from his earphones. It wasn’t loud, but as the days went by and got closer to my birthday, a lot had begun to change. Things that my father had already drilled into my head. Things like sensitive hearing, strength, and speed. When we reached the end of the trail, Decker pulled out his earphones.
“Hey man,” he greeted, and I nodded in response. “Did you hear about Robin?” he then asked, and I frowned.
“I heard my father yelling at Gavin…at around one am or so…but otherwise, no, I don’t know what’s going on,” I said as I leaned forward, my hands on my knees.
“Well, she may have gone too far this time as she brought a boy to her house,” I glanced up at Decker, who was stretching his left arm over his head.
“A boy? What boy?” I asked, curiosity spiking up at the news.
“Some human boy from school I guess,” he said as he stretched his other arm over his head. “Gavin caught them in her room and threw him out,”
“What was he doing in her room?” I asked, standing up.
“Ah come on Seff, what do two young teenagers do in a bedroom at midnight?” Decker smirked and I rolled my eyes. “Anyway, Gavin throwing him out was quite a scene and, of course, Robin wasn’t having any of it. The patrol escorted the boy out only to find his motorbike parked at the gate,”
“Huh,” I mumbled out as I started stretching.
“I guess that was sort of smart, I mean, they still got caught, but anyway, I guess your father is going to make some kind of decision at this morning’s meeting. My father said that Marric was so angry that he wanted to throw Robin in the cellar,” my eyes went wide at that. My father was not an unreasonable man – or at least I didn’t think so – and I couldn’t see how he would want to throw a female into the cellar. “I don’t know where she is now, but we’ll soon find out…come on, let’s head back,” Decker pushed the earphones back in his ears and started going back the way we had come. I quickly finished stretching, not really allowing myself to think about the meeting, as I caught up with him pretty easily. Why hadn’t I asked him about Luca? I was curious about what had happened between them but yet, I kept thinking that either Decker or Luca would bring it up, but they didn’t. We ran along the trail, his house coming up before mine, and we waved at each other as he went inside while I continued to run toward the packhouse.
“Your father wants you in the conference room in ten minutes!” my mother yelled out as I entered through the back door, and I groaned as I went up to my room. I grabbed my phone before I headed to the bathroom and closed the door. No new messages. Jena was sticking to our agreement about not talking over the summer and, admittedly, I missed my girlfriend. I was tempted to plan something with her, but I knew her birthday was coming up in two days. That meant her pack would probably be making all kinds of birthday arrangements and, if I remembered correctly, Carla had mentioned a small party. Before the urge to message her took control, I stripped out of my sweaty shorts and t-shirt and turned on the tap in the shower. I made sure not to take too long in the shower and soon I was knocking on the office door.
“Come in, Seff,” my father called out, and I rolled my eyes before I pushed open the door. “Close it,” he ordered, and I quickly closed the door behind me as I scanned the room. Aside from my father, Reed, Decker, Luca, and Nikko were also seated around the large rectangular table. Luca avoided my gaze while Decker simply shrugged as I sat down. “Last night Robin brought her boyfriend into our territory, she snuck him into her house and took him to her bedroom,” my father stood up as he informed us about what had happened last night. My mind was stuck on the fact that Robin had a boyfriend. “Gavin was on patrol, and I suppose that is why she thought she would be able to get away with it, except her father had returned to the house to make sure she had gotten home safely…only to find her with her boyfriend in her bedroom,” I was tempted to ask what they were doing, especially since he kept repeating that they were in her bedroom but I kept my mouth shut as I waited for him to finish up. “Gavin lost his cool, which I can understand, and threw the boy out of the house. Robin started fighting with him, screaming about who knows what when two of the patrolmen assisted Gavin and escorted the boy out of our territory. He had parked his motorbike just outside by the gate and it was covered with bush and leaves. Needless to say, Robin must have thought about this plan of hers but had not been counting on Gavin stopping by the house,” my father sat back down as he looked between all of us. “I had decided that I would give Gavin two options, either Robin is sent elsewhere, or they both leave,” no one dared to say anything and when my father roughly stood up once again, I knew that the s**t was about to go down. “Don’t just sit there, all of you…I didn’t call for this meeting for no one to say anything,”
“Gavin won’t send Robin away,” Nikko said, and I suppose he would know, after all, he is the warrior leader and Gavin is one of his best warriors. Marric started to walk around the room, and he waved his hand, silently urging Nikko to continue. “He will take the second option and they will both leave,”
“I know Robin is a problem, but Gavin is one of our best,” Reed added.
“I’ve watched him…I mean…he is pretty good,” Luca spoke up and that surprised me. Usually, Luca was quiet during meetings and for him to talk up like that must mean he felt comfortable, and I frowned as I gazed over at him. “If I may ask…what sort of punishment has been given out to Robin?” I was even more surprised by his question. Luca seemed to be taking this seriously and that meant I would have to step up because if I didn’t, my father would be giving me an earful later.
“We haven’t spoken to Robin directly,” Reed said, and I could see that he was eyeing Luca just as I had.
“Maybe we should talk to both Gavin and Robin,” I quickly suggested. “Give them both a chance…like a month or something and if she continues to break the rules…then they both have to leave,” I added as I leaned back in my seat. I did notice that my father had a look on his face, a look that showed me he was proud I had offered a suggestion and I mentally tapped my shoulder for a job well done.
“Reed, get Gavin and Robin in here,” my father ordered, and Reed quickly stood up. “Nikko, stand guard by the door while I have a quick chat with these three,” Nikko stood up as he curiously looked over at Luca before leaving the room to stand guard. “I am disappointed in you, Decker,” he started. “I was pleasantly surprised that Luca was the first one to speak up,” he glanced over at me, and I cringed at that. He had wanted me to be the first. “Regardless, I expect the three of you to sit here through this meeting with Gavin and Robin, but I do not expect you to talk, understood?”
“Yes, Alpha,” Decker and Luca said as I nodded.
“Good, now go sit over there,” he pointed, at the far end of the room, and the three of us got up and sat down next to each other with me in the middle. “And I don’t know what is going on between the three of you, but I strongly suggest you fix it,” I did my best not to show any emotion as I nodded. I needed to find out what had happened between these two and I was tempted to confront them right now. However, just as I opened my mouth, the door opened, and Gavin and Robin were escorted inside. I couldn’t help but check out Robin as she took a seat, her blonde hair was wild, and I had to guess that she had just been woken up. “Right, Robin, I don’t need to lecture you about what you did and how we all know that it goes against the pack rules…and I am sure your father has been giving you warnings, but this warning is coming directly from your Alpha, understood,”
“Yes, Alpha,” Robin whispered as she hung her head and I wondered if she had any regrets.
“I am giving you one month to stop this nonsense. One month for you to prove not only to me but to the whole pack that you can be responsible,” my father announced. “If you fail to prove yourself, then you and your father will be banished from this pack, understood?” Gavin had been glaring at his daughter while my father had spoken but when the word banished was said, Gavin had snapped his attention to his Alpha. Robin had yet to look up as she whispered the same words – ‘Yes, Alpha’. “Dismissed,” my father said as he looked over at the three of us and nodded, clearly dismissing us as well. I waited until everyone had left the room before I approached my father.
“Dad…would you mind if I took Decker and Luca to the beach for a while?” I hated having to ask for permission, but this had to be done. “Something is going on between those two and I want to get to the bottom of it,” once again my father looked proud as he nodded.
“Just make sure to be home by dinner,” he said as I turned to leave.
“Sure, Dad,” I said as I hurried out of the office to catch up to Luca and Decker, who had been stopped by mother as she held a tray filled with cookies. Thank you, mom!
