« Seff »
The ride to the beach had been silent for once and it was awkward as hell. They both knew that I was going to confront them, and I hoped that once we had talked about whatever was going on, then we could enjoy being at the beach before we would have to return home. We all got out of the ranger, and I led the way down to the beach and, since it was still relatively early, the beach was pretty much deserted. I plopped down on the sand, not a care in the world as Decker sat on my left and Luca on my right. We simply sat there for a while as the salty, sticky breeze caressed our skin. I wasn’t sure what they were doing, but I enjoyed watching the waves roll in and the sounds of the seagulls somewhere doing whatever seagulls do.
“What is going on?” I finally asked and I waited patiently for one of them to start talking. I had been expecting Luca to speak up, but the silence stretched on, and I would be a fool to think it was comfortable. “Decker?” I questioned as I glanced at him, but he was looking down and I noticed he had been playing with the sand. When he failed to answer me, I stood up and glared down at them as they both looked up at me in surprise. “This is stupid, talk to me!” I demanded.
“Luca kissed Carla,” Decker eventually revealed, and I froze. This should have been good news, except I knew Decker had a crush on Carla, but then again…what was the problem here?
“And?” I pushed, waiting for a better explanation than that. It wasn’t often that this kind of thing happened. In fact, the last disagreement we had was between me and Luca about Jena. Once again, neither one of them wanted to talk, so I took out my phone and did the one thing I could think of. I called Carla.
“Seff?” clearly, she was confused as to why I was calling her.
“Yeah,” I answered as Luca jumped up and started waving his hands.
“Um…hi…ah…why are you calling me?” she asked, and I felt as though I was stuck between a rock and a hard place as Luca silently begged me not to say anything. “Are you calling about Jena?”
“Ah…yeah,” I lied.
“I thought she said that you two wouldn’t be talking over this summer because of the whole transitioning thing...?”
“Yeah, I just wanted to find out how she is?” I rolled my eyes as Luca clasped his hands together in gratitude.
“She is great, as always,” Carla laughed awkwardly, and I sighed.
“Thanks, Carla,” I said and then I smiled. “Let her know that I called, that I am thinking about her, and that I wish her a happy birthday,”
“Will do, Seff,” she said before she hung up and pushed my phone back into my shorts pocket.
“Start talking,” I ordered.
“We drove with Carla to the party, and I was still…well, I still didn’t believe that she had a thing for me, but Decker insisted that I sit up front,” Luca started to explain and I folded my arms, ready to hear about whatever the hell happened that day. “She was so quiet, and it was awkward but once we go to the party, she seemed to relax and so I kissed her,” I raised a brow at his hurried version of the events and I looked down at Decker, who had built a small sand mountain.
“Decker?” I called and he snapped his head up and then slowly nodded. “Come on! Surely you don’t expect me to believe that is all that happened!”
“The truth is,” Decker started as he stood up. “Luca kissed Carla and I lost my s**t and punched him,”
“Why the hell would you punch him?” I asked curiously. “Did something happen between you and Carla?”
“I may have left out the part that Carla had been cuddling up to me until Luca swooped in and kissed her,” he further explained.
“Ok,” I turned away from them and stared out at the ocean, once again being drawn in by the waves. I wasn’t sure how to fix this situation and I most certainly wasn’t going to call Carla again. I was somewhat annoyed at myself for not noticing the mark under Luca's left eye. How had I missed that?
“Seff told me she was interested,” I heard Luca whisper. “I thought that if I went for her then I could finally get over my feelings for Jena,”
“I know,” Decker hissed out and I flinched at his tone. “But you also know that I have been crushing on Carla for almost two years,”
“I know, man, but what do you want me to do? You forced me to sit in the front with her, you kept pushing me and I thought it's what you wanted,” Luca made a good point, but I didn’t turn around as I let the two of them work it out.
“It is! It's just that when I saw you kiss her, I literally just lost it,” I could hear movement behind me, but I stood firm, ignoring the temptation to turn around.
“What do you want from me, man? I don’t like Carla…I mean, I like her but nothing more than a friend,” Luca admitted. “I’m sorry for making a move on the girl you like; I really am, but you can’t just pin this on me. You were being pushy about it,” silence followed, and I knew that this was bigger than Luca kissing Carla.
“I’m sorry I was pushy and I’m sorry that I punched you,” Decker finally spoke up, apologizing, and I slowly turned around to see them both on their feet facing each other.
“Luca…what are we going to do?” I asked seriously. “Since you still have feelings for Jena, and it obviously pains you to see us together…what are we going to do?”
“I’m trying to get over her, man, but it's not as easy as I thought it would be,” Luca admitted. “I keep thinking that I’ll get over it when I transition and meet my mate,”
“That is a solution, but in the meantime…” my voice trailed off as it once again occurred to me that Jena may not be my mate and I sunk back down onto the sand.
“Don’t do that,” Decker snapped, but I just stared ahead as I thought about how horrible that would be. “You and Jena were made for each other, like puzzle pieces,”
“Even though I have a massive crush on her, I have to agree with him,” Luca added, and I looked up and sighed.
“Do you really think so?” I asked them.
“Yeah, the only time I’ve ever seen two people in sync like that is when they are mates,” Decker pointed out, and I breathed out in relief as I stood up. The three of us stood there, grinning at each other like idiots and I eventually broke the bro moment and looked at Luca.
“It's not fair on Carla for you to try and use how she feels about you to forget about Jena. You should probably make it clear to her that you aren’t into her that way,” Luca looked surprised but then nodded before I turned to Decker. “Carla is not into you and that sucks and I’m sorry, but you have got to get a grip on that. Try and get over her,” what I said to both of them was harsh, but that was the reality of the situation. “Besides, all three of us are going to be transitioning and these crushes will either blossom into something more or it’ll die out when you meet your mate,” Decker nodded while Luca frowned.
“What if…what if…I mean, what if Jena turned out to be Decker’s mate and Carla turns out to be your mate?” Luca’s eyes were wide as he looked between me and Decker.
“Seriously?” I deadpanned. “You are going to say that to me after I just had a freak out about Jena not being my mate?!” Luca shrugged sheepishly as he grinned.
“Jena is hot…” Decker commented, and I snapped my attention to him, and he was standing there wiggling his eyebrows suggestively and I was ready to wrap my hands around his neck. Decker squealed loudly as he took off running and I was right behind him.
“I’m going to kill you!” I shouted as I picked up speed. Decker started running in zig-zags, changing his direction to avoid getting captured.
“I was teasing!” he yelled back at me and even though I knew that I continued running after him. The frustration rose as he continued to outsmart me. I took a deep breath and watched his chaotic movements for a moment before I carefully thought about his steps. When I was certain I had his idiotic pattern worked out, I jumped forward to the left and managed to knock him off his feet, making him roll back a bit. “Dude!” he gasped as he sat up. “How the hell did you do that?” I shook my head as I tackled him and we rolled around in the sand for a bit, as I playfully tugged on his hair and lightly punched his arms.
“Jena is hot,” I growled out as I winked at him before letting him go. We both burst out laughing and I saw Luca jogging along the beach to catch up with us. He wasn’t making much effort as I saw the phone in his hands.
“Guys, my father texted me,” he informed us when he reached us. “Robin is making a scene and Marric forced her into the cellar,” Decker groaned out as he got up and I laid back, staring up at the clear blue sky. “What are you doing? Get up, we have to go home,” Luca nudged my side with his foot, and I gave him a dirty look.
“Why do we have to go now? He has already dealt with it,” I argued as I rolled onto my stomach and stared out at the ocean. I wanted to go swimming. I jumped up, ignoring Luca and Decker as they tried to convince me that we should head back. I pulled off my t-shirt and kicked off my sneakers.
“What are you doing?” Decker questioned as he grabbed my arm.
“What does it look like I’m doing?” I smirked at him before I ran forward, my feet hitting the cold water causing me to shiver as I pushed forward. When I was deep enough, I sunk down and let the water consume me as I opened my eyes underwater. I spotted Decker and Luca swimming toward me and, if I could, I would have grinned, so instead, I threw them the middle finger. Decker threw one back while Luca looked annoyed. I didn’t care as I pushed forward, swimming up to the top and breaking through the water to fill my lungs with much-needed air. When Decker and Luca joined me, I grabbed Luca’s head and playfully pushed him back under. I pulled him back up and smiled. “Do you still want to go back?” I asked and he looked hesitant for a split second before he smiled.
“Nope!”
“Race you back to shore!” Decker shouted out and we scrambled around in the water before we started swimming back. This was nice. We hadn’t done something like this in a while and I enjoyed spending time with my friends instead of doing pack s**t. Even though I didn’t want to go back, I knew that we would have to sooner, rather than later.
