KARA
“How was Lianne?” I asked as soon as I saw Ruis enter the room.
Today is the day of the wedding. I’m nervous but definitely not ‘happy getting married’ kind of nervous. I’m more worried about messing up my lines for later. I had it all memorized, but it’s different now that everyone in the inner circle would be watching… and silently judging me either way.
I hate to admit it, but seeing Ruis gave me a sense of familiarity. Besides, I really want to know Lianne’s condition. I haven’t talked to her since the other day, and she seemed under the weather then, too. It took everything in me not to drop everything and go to her.
Ruis grinned, “Don’t worry about your little sister. It’s your wedding day today. Have you got enough beauty rest?”
Just like that, the little sense of comfort was gone. I’ve never had the urge to strangle someone as much as I do now. He’s enjoying all of this as if it’s his personal entertainment.
“Stop mocking me and answer. Unless you want me to ruin this wedding by making a scene at the ceremony.” The threat naturally came out of my mouth. I’d be reckless if I had to.
He snorted, “Please as if you have the guts to do that. Besides, what you wanted to do would only get you killed.”
I reciprocated the smile, smiling as vindictively as he was. “And what made you think death is the worst thing that could happen to me? You sold me, and I’ll be a baby maker for the Alpha. That’s how it is, isn’t it? Why do you think I’ll be scared of death?”
The smile on his face disappeared in an instant. “You’re getting quite feisty, aren’t you?”
“What can I say? You’ve been around in my life for some time now. I’ve picked up a thing or two.” I remained calm. I’ve already hit rock bottom simply by waiting here. He can’t easily scare me anymore.
He clicked his tongue, “Your sister’s fine. What? Do you think I’ll neglect my own daughter? I’m not a monster, you know.”
“That’s exactly what you are. Now leave.” I ordered with the coldest tone I could let out.
“You’re really feeling your Luna position, aren’t you? Have you forgotten what I said last time? You’re not a queen here. You’re a f*****g slave.”
I shook my head and got up, “No. I will never forget that, but the Alpha is already on his way here. The ceremony is about to start. You don’t want to ruin the perfect wedding, do you?”
He was about to complain but realized that I was telling the truth. It should be baffling him by now how I realized before he did. Omegas have weaker senses, only a tad bit stronger than humans, but I could feel the Alpha in a deeper sense because I was mated to him. Not that anyone should know.
“We’ll talk later. Make sure not to mess up your lines. The elders are particularly obsessed with the idea of a perfect wedding. Try to sound… like you actually mean it.”
He promptly stepped out, and I could finally breathe easily for a few seconds until the Alpha arrived to accompany me.
Suddenly, my heart is in chaos again.
I know this was part of the ceremony. He would be the one to bring me to the wedding. It was a way for the pair to share the moment privately before the actual wedding, but for us, it was merely a ceremonial obligation.
Alpha Dominic wore a white suit, making his presence less threatening than usual. They also gave him a golden mask, which complemented his look. Now that I think about it, he looks like how angels are perceived by humans, minus the looming presence.
I probably look like a potato beside him…
“Are you ready?” His question snapped me back to reality. I hope he didn’t notice that I was staring at him intensely. My wolf is surprisingly quiet today, but I don’t think it was already giving up in trying to reach for Dominic’s wolf.
I quickly stood and nodded, “Yes. Sorry for spacing out.”
He didn’t respond and quietly led me outside. I pulled my dress up to walk properly and catch up on his steps. My mind wandered while thinking about the lines I should speak later.
Ruis wasn’t the best person to remind me what I should do, but I didn’t want more insults darted at me.
I accidentally stepped on my dress and found myself falling. I closed my eyes, expecting a fall. It has been my worry since they had me fit the wedding dress, but I couldn’t really complain.
Contrary to my expectations, neither the pain nor humiliation I anticipated happened. Instead, I felt a hand helping me up. I opened my eyes and saw Dominic holding me and helping me regain my balance.
All the color in my face had drained out. I’ve already reached rock bottom, and somehow, the world is still doing its best to humiliate me even more.
In contrast to me, his expression didn’t even change a bit. He casually let go of me and continued on his way after I regained my balance.
“Thank you for helping me.” I managed to mutter after we reached the car. We were both in the back seat, but I didn’t dare to stay close and used what remained of our space to back away from him.
As expected, he didn’t reply. His eyes were darted outside, and he seemed to be in deep thoughts. I’ve been pondering while preparing for the wedding. Surely, he didn’t wish to be married like this, either. Many of the weddings within the inner circle are arranged, and so are many of the marriages within the Alpha and Beta lines. It was to ensure the lines were preserved, but it doesn’t mean it was okay. The only way to get around this usually is to meet your mate.
Weirdly enough, we’ve got it the other way around. But it doesn’t really matter because he couldn’t feel the bond.
Was it because we were weak?
My heart sank after hearing my wolf’s low and discouraged voice. I also wanted to answer the question, but I didn’t know. It’s both frustrating and disheartening.
The moon shone brightly, as it would be full in three days. All of our weddings are done at night as an offering to the Goddess. The nearer the full moon, the better. I wonder if this was the Goddess’ plan because I don’t remember doing something that would anger her. Maybe I just didn’t get lucky with the lottery of fate.
The ceremony quickly commenced as soon as we arrived. Fortunately, some people helped me with my dress. I didn’t want to make another scene that would scar me for life.
For a brief moment, I let my eyes roam, somehow wishing I’d see my mom and Lianne, even though I knew it was impossible.
My mom kept telling me when I was younger that I’d be the most beautiful bride when I got married and that she wanted to see it. Of course, I know that wasn’t true for others. There were tons of gorgeous she-wolves that I couldn’t even compare myself to. Still, I would do anything for my mom to be here. As life goes on, it wouldn’t be easy, but at least my mom would still be with me. She would know what to do and how I would be able to cope with this.
I composed myself, aware that thinking about my mother would make me tear up. The ceremony continued with our elders giving out words of wisdom about how we’re supposed to work on our relationship and always put the pack in our every decision. I’ve heard this a couple of times in the rehearsal, word by word, and I don’t think they change the lines that much because I also listened to this when my mom and Ruis got married.
Dominic was clearly not listening as I questioned why we were still going through with the ceremony. Marriage is sacred, but if it is used for convenience, it already misses the point. I was thinking about that until I realized that there were people who were not familiar at all. I didn’t even know there would be visitors from another pack.
We reached halfway through the ceremony, and it was time for our vows. I just have to say the vows, and I can finally rest easy, but it also means my fate is sealed.
“We humbly offer this marriage to the Goddess of the Moon. May the good Goddess bless your union. May you face and overcome any challenge that comes your way together, uplifting each other as you go on. May your relationship be filled with love, understanding, and happiness.”
We faced the rest of the pack.
“The union between Alpha Dominic and Luna Kara Sinclair is now sealed.”
