Chapter 2 James took a step backwards. “Get off! Get off there at once!” The elderly man was dressed in an assortment of skins that had been decorated with feathers and flowers. His curly hair was a dirty brown colour and, like his moustache and short, scruffy beard, it was peppered with grey. Unfortunately a lifetime in the outdoors had weathered his skin, giving it the appearance of wrinkled leather. James looked down at the considerable drop not a metre from where he stood. “Thanks,” he called back, acknowledging the man’s warning, which had saved him from plummeting off the edge. He retraced his steps and found a small path that wound around the curve of the hill to the bottom, though when he reached the ground below he realised it wasn’t a hill at all.
