Amelia
Thrumming dance music vibrates against the walls as we enter the former warehouse. It is full of scantily clad patrons dancing and drinking. Plush couches are gathered around LED fireplaces with a large dance floor full of sweaty patrons.
“What are we drinking?” Ernesto shouts at us.
“Something sweet,” I shout back.
He grins as Kylie ponders. “Get me something strong,” Kylie replies.
I give her a look, and she shrugs.
“When you have kids, you’ll understand,” she laughs.
Ernesto walks towards the bar while Kylie and I belly up to a tall silver table near the dance floor. I look around and catch the eye of a few men. They smile and wink, but none approach.
I tap my fingers on the table as I watch the dancers. Ernesto returns with our drinks. They are all pink.
“They are all the same,” he announces. “Sweet and strong.”
I nod as I pick up a glass and chug half of it. It tastes like fruity bubblegum. “Wow,” I smack my lips.
Ernesto laughs as Kylie chugs her drink down. “Slow down, girl. We have all night,” Ernesto says to her.
Kylie makes a face at him and sets her drink down. “I’m going to dance now. Are you coming, Amelia?” She asks me.
I finish my drink and link arms with Kylie. She pulls me onto the dance floor.
We push past other dancers and get dirty looks, but Kylie ignores them as we get close to the DJ. I look up at the young black man spinning the table. He winks at me and continues his moves. Kylie and I start gyrating with the music, and before long, everything else disappears.
We dance for a few songs and get some more bubblegum drinks. It doesn’t take long to feel the effects of our drinks.
“Hey gorgeous,” a buff man wearing a tank top grins at me. “Want to dance?”
I nod, and we start to bump butts. He leans against me, and I let my inhibitions go.
“What is your name?” He breathes into my ear.
“Amelia,” I respond.
“I’m Joe,” he tells me and wraps an arm around my waist. I feel him grind against me, and at first, I stiffen up and try to pull away. “Relax, sweetheart.”
I sigh and let myself lean into him. He keeps his lips on my neck as we dance together. I look into his brown eyes as we get closer to kissing. The music stops, and I hear a screech.
“Joseph Moss,” A short, thin woman with curly black hair storms up to us. “What the f**k?”
“Lisa!” Joe yells. “Did you follow me?” He demands as he lets me go.
“Who is this slut?” Lisa jabs a finger at me.
Kylie runs up as the music starts again. “What’s happening?”
I throw my hands up as Joe and Lisa begin screaming at each other, “s**t, I want no part of it.” I laugh and walk towards the bar.
“Damn drama,” Ernesto remarks. “Glad I am gay.”
“Like gays don’t have cheating,” I laugh as I order another bubblegum drink.
“We do,” Ernesto huffs.
“Okay,” I grin and down my drink. “I need to sit,” I say, stumbling towards the couches. I sit down and barely notice that I am being stared at. I look toward a pair of grey eyes belonging to one of the hottest men I have ever seen. I swear I have seen him on TV before, but I can’t place his face. He smiles, revealing stark white teeth that go with his short sandy blonde hair. He is wearing a white tank top that reveals a couple of tattoos on his upper arms with as tight pair of black jeans.. The man has the right amount of muscle for my tastes.
Slowly he rises from the couch and approaches me. Without words, he extends his hand to me. I place my hand in his, and he pulls me to my feet.
“Would you like to dance?” He asks in a smooth voice.
I nod with my mouth hanging open like a fish. I am pulled to the center of the dancefloor, and the crowd seems to part, letting us occupy a wide berth. Grey eyes pull me to his hard chest as we move with the music, and everything around us disappears. He looks into my eyes as we dance.
“You have pretty eyes,” He remarks.
“Uh, huh,” I snort a response.
He smirks, sending sparks through my body, and my knees go weak, and I nearly fall to the floor. “Oop, don’t fall, sweetheart,” He laughs.
I don’t know how long we danced for how many songs, but we danced. Finally, he pulls me from the floor.
“Are you thirsty?” He asks, and I nod. “What would you like?”
“Bubblegum,” I mutter.
“Okay,” he laughs and steps towards the bar.
I stare right at him as he moves away. Other women try getting his attention as he has a draw. But he ignores them.
“Amelia?” I hear my friends call out to me.
“Who is that?” Ernesto asks.
I look at my best friend and shrug.
My dance partner returns and hands me a pink drink. He smiles at Ernesto, who makes a moaning noise. Kylie giggles. “Excuse us,” Grey Eyes says to them and leads me to a table. “What is your name?”
“Amelia,” I mutter.
“That’s a pretty name. You can call me Ez,” He informs me and takes a sip from the bottle of Coors beer in his hand.
I sip my bubblegum drink.
“Do you come here often?” Ez asks.
I shrug, “It’s my first time.”
“Really?” He smirks again, making my knees go weak.
“Yeah, my friends brought me here to celebrate my degree,” I tell Ez.
“What kind of degree?” Ez wonders.
“A bachelor’s degree in computer science,” I respond. “It took longer than it should have. I had to help my family in their business.”
“Oh, I get that,” Ez nods and sips his beer. “I’m in my family’s business. What kind of business does your family do?”
“We own a butcher shop in Aurora,” I reply. “It’s been in the family for like five generations.”
“Wow,” Ez nods. “Same with my family business.”
“Cool,” I say awkwardly and drink my cocktail.
“Want to dance some more?” Ez asks.
I nod and let him take me back onto the dance floor. We dance together for a few more songs before the effects of the alcohol make me sway a bit. Ez wraps his strong arm around my waist and keeps me from falling.
“Do you want to go someplace more comfortable?” He asks.
“Like where?” I wonder.
“A hotel,” He waggles his eyebrows, and I go weak in the knees again.
I nearly fall to the floor, but Ez catches me. “Y-yeah,” I nod.
