"Your propensity test results are indefinite. You are a convergence.”
It was what an old Magus said. Her eyes were laced with concern, confusion, and fear all at once. I didn’t understand what my results mean until she told me that my life is in danger. A ‘Convergence’ is someone who has unique powers, unlike the other normal people whose only power is certain. Mine is indefinite, as she says it. Meaning, I have more than one power, and that is unlikely. The King executes those who have shown such symptoms without a trial. Because convergence threatens the equilibrium of our society. ‘Everyone must be equal.’ this is the motto of the Kingdom I live in. they are plastered in every house, streets and practically everywhere.
I put both of my hand below my jaw, as I seat on the cold pavement floor of the restroom. Confusion and fear run in my head. Just a few minutes ago, an old magus told me that I am convergent. Not exactly the news I was expecting. I’ve always thought that I would stay forever with my family, and now I am thinking about how to hide for how long. There are 3 blocks that I can choose from; Combat, are the people who protect the Kingdom against enemies, and they are the one who makes sure that the King’s Law would be executed accordingly. Magus, are the healers, and who does the propensity tests every year. Aucourant, our educators. But, there are also people who are not lucky enough to have those kinds of powers, they are called, The Blockless. They usually ended up being a servant.
The old Magus who pricked me with the syringe told me to make the right choice and she told that no matter what happens, I shouldn’t tell anyone not even my own family. I had to be extremely careful and never tell anyone what I was. Even though I was born into a Magus family. Her words were swirling in my mind by the time I was sitting on the chair while having supper with my brother, and sister. Our house is made with white woods, just like every Magus family’s house. My younger sister, Brianna, was chopping down her meal, impatiently against her marble plate. Her auburn hair was neatly braided on her left side. She’s wearing green clothing, just like mine, my brother’s and our parents’. Green is the block color of Magus. The combat’s is black, and aucourant’s is navy blue. So easy to identify which block a person belongs to. My older brother, Simon, he’s a year older than me, but our parents decided to take the tests with me. That’s why he had to wait a year until I can finally take my tests with him. He runs his hand through his tousled dark hair, as he takes another bite.
My mother, Lily Scotts, inhales, and says, “How was your Propensity tests?” her eyes travel to me, then shifts to him. My heart beat run so fast, and I nearly choke what I had just swallowed.
“It went well.” My brother said, and sigh. My mother throws her a worried a look, “It didn’t look like that it went well from what I can see.” she says, and gives him a reassuring smile. An urge for hope hits me. Maybe, I can trust her? After all, she is my mother. The old Magus’ voice plays inside my mind like a broken alarm. Don’t trust anyone, not even your own family.
“My results show that I am a Combat.” He mutters, then looks at her. Her eyes widen a little, but she smiles at him. “Congratulation, I always knew your result will be Combat. The parents call at the academy, and the detention you have endured no children of Magus have experienced.”
It’s true. My brother is the only kid in our block who always ended up in the office of the Lord Chancellor of Academy. Some of our Educators wouldn’t even believe it whenever he tells them that he’s of Magus. Because no children of Magus would like to pick a fight with any kids. Only him. Magus people are known for their unexceptional kindness, and hospitality. Unlike, the Combat who were trained to be ruthless, sharp and harsh.
“It’s strange that one month from now, Bella and I will be leaving you guys for good.” He honestly said.
“Your father and I did the same thing 20 years ago.” mom said.
“How about you, bella?” My father asked.
My heart skipped a beat, “It’s also a combat.” I said. My mouth almost trembles.
My brother looks at me suspiciously, then grins at me. “What? That was a surprise. I never thought you had it in you, You have always been the goody goody.” he says.
“Me, neither.” I said.
“At least, I wouldn’t be the only Scotts who’ll suffer during the initiation,” He said.
“Initiation?”
“Initiation is the training to get to Acceptance of Combat. I heard many trainee died during the initiation.”
