DYLAN'S POV
FLASHBACK
The Night of Cailean's Accident
"Greg, check the woods thoroughly. Make sure that there will be no signs or any traces of her will be left," I ordered Greg as I carried my unconscious mate in bridal style.
"Yes, Alpha," he replied and immediately followed my order. Greg left together with the assigned patrol for the night.
"Let's go back to the house," I told Phelan and started heading our way back home.
I lay her down carefully on the bed of the vacant room, scared that I might hurt her fragile body. And Will immediately assessed her body and started tending to the open wound on her forehead.
"Mia, can you get some sleeping clothes and bring them to the room opposite the common study room," I told Mia in the mind link.
"Right away, Alpha," she replied in the mind link. After a few minutes, Mia entered the room carrying a white nightgown.
"Once Will is done with his work, clean her up and change her clothes. Let me know as soon as you're done," I instructed Mia and immediately left the room as soon as I finished giving her the instruction.
I went to my office and took a few strides to the painting hanging on the left wall. I remove the painting to reveal the safe where I hide my most valuable possessions. I punched in the codes and took out a rectangular luxury box as big as an A5 size notebook containing my mom's precious memory. I stared at my mom's beautiful necklace. It has a white gold chain with a white gold crescent moon pendant encrusted with perfectly cut diamonds.
"Mom, I already found the right person who can wear this," I said out loud and smiled, then placed the necklace back inside the safe.
I sat on the couch and grabbed an old book that my mom keeps telling me to read when I was a kid, but no matter how many times I read it, I still couldn't get what it's all about. Mom told me that she'd explain everything to me when the right time comes, but unfortunately, that time will never come anymore. Since she's already gone, I think I need an expert to decipher this book's message. A moon expert perhaps because it shows and says many things about the moon, especially the crescent moon. And there's a page that shows illustrations involving two crescent moons that comes with a riddle.
"Only the light of the night can brighten up the heart of darkness. Only when the two crescents entwined."
I really cannot find any sense in this book. Earth has only one moon unless NASA already discovered another one and never bothered to tell the people about it. Or maybe it's referring to the planet Mars? I am no expert when it comes to astronomy, but I sure do know the basic facts.
As I continued skimming on the book's pages, Mia called me while standing by the open door.
"She's ready, Alpha," Mia informed.
"Thank you, Mia," I replied.
"You're welcome, Alpha. Is there anything else I can help you with?" she asked.
"That would be all. You can take a rest now," I said, dismissing her.
"Ok, Alpha," she said and quickly walked her way out of my office.
I went to my mate's room, who is sound asleep. Will is standing beside her, most probably monitoring her condition.
"How is she?" I asked Will as I reached to his side.
"Her vitals are fine, and her body is responding well to the medications I gave her. Surprisingly, her wounds are healing fast. In short, she'll be fine in a day or two. But she needs a lot of rest." Will explained. Relief washed over me upon hearing what he said. Goddess knows how worried I am about her wellbeing.
"That's a piece of good news," I replied.
"I gave her something to put her into a deep sleep. I will come back here tomorrow to check on her." He said while packing his stuff.
"Goodnight, Dylan," Will said before he left the room.
I decided to stay in her room for a while to ensure that she is one hundred percent safe. No relapse. I trust Will's medical skills, and he is very good at what he does, but when it comes to my mate-- I wanted to be the one to have the final say. I should be the one to monitor her condition closely.
I stood at her bedside, watching her quietly as she slept. Then Greg suddenly opened our mind link.
"Alpha, we found a car crashed into a tree. It has your mate's scent and is mixed with an unfamiliar one. I suspect it's a rogue," Greg informed me.
"I'm coming there," I told Greg. I want to do the investigation myself to make sure that nothing will be overlooked, so I hurried back into the woods.
I can smell my mate's scent filling the car mixed with the scent of blood and a very unpleasant smell of a rogue wolf. I searched the inside of the car but found nothing valuable, not even a purse. Maybe she lost it while she was trying to escape the rogue.
"You know what to do with this car," I told Greg, as I felt satisfied with my search.
"Yes, Alpha!" Greg acknowledges with certainty.
"Great, after that, all of you can go back to your posts," I said.
"Yes, Alpha," they answered in unison. I gave them a nod then started walking in the direction of the pack house.
As I proceeded to walk on the path where I could smell my mate's scent, I saw a glimpse of sparkling light on one of the branches ahead. I increased my pace to get there quickly and found out that it's a necklace. It carries a crescent moon pendant, the same size as my mom's, but this one doesn't have diamonds on it, but the elements used were the same. The chain is broken, and it's looped around the branch. It looks like it snapped from someone's neck. I carefully removed the chain from the tree branch and slid it into my pocket, thinking that it might be my mate's.
I went straight to my mate's room as soon as I reached the house to put the necklace I have found on the side table, so she would see it once she wakes up.
I smiled as I stared at her lovely face once more. She looks like Sleeping Beauty, waiting for her prince charming to come and kiss her awake.
I slowly reached down to my pocket where I put the necklace, and to my surprise, it wasn't there. I searched my body, the floor of the entire room, and the hallway to double-check, but the necklace is nowhere to be found.
