There is a buzz of excitement in the air as all of the newly graduated combat and tactical advisors enter the large meeting room. We each take our seats and wait for the Commander to come with our first assignments.
“I wonder where we will be sent off to, I can’t take the suspense!” Kiera squeals loudly from the chair across from me. I catch Matt at the other end of the table rolling his eyes in annoyance. Kiera has always been mildly annoying to me but in general I get along with all of the girls and guys on my course. There are about 20 of us who have been hand selected from various packs across the country. The fact that I am not interested in having a relationship has helped to steer me away from any drama between myself and my coworkers. Sure Matt and I have our little moments and it was no secret amongst the group but everyone knows that I am very much against having a boyfriend at this point in my life. Some of the other guys in my team have tried and failed to get close to me in the past. They quickly gave up when I brushed off their advances. This is exactly the way I like it. The door swings open, shutting Kiera up mid rant and we all are grateful for the interruption.
“Team, it’s good to see you all this morning looking a lot brighter and in better condition than last night” Commander Johnson states with a smirk on his face.
“Let’s get down to business. I know you are all eager to get going with your first assignments. Some of you will be deployed to various packs to help out while some of you will remain here and work on some things for the Werewolf Council.” Matt and I make eye contact and I know he is thinking the same as me.
“Screw staying here! It’s time to spread our wings and get out of this place.” Matt says to me through the mind link. Since joining the team we were given the ability to mind link each other. Unfortunately, it means I had to sever the mind link with my pack and my family. However, it never did sit well with me that Alpha Lucas could mind link me should he ever please to. Not that he ever would.
I definitely agree with Matt. I need to get out and sink my teeth into a new challenge. My wolf Ivy is itching to see some action too.
“I hope we get placed somewhere with some lush forest” I hear her sigh hopefully.
The Commander starts tossing files in different directions working his way around each individual telling them about their mission ahead. Some fractions of the team are being sent to assist in negotiations between rival packs in an attempt to avoid all out war. Others are being sent to represent the council in peace treaty talks. Matt is handed a red folder which he opens quickly and I soon see his face drop.
“Matt I need you here, to help me with some council business and I need to you to oversee and help adjust the training programme for our new recruits. I’m sorry I know it’s not what you wanted but it won’t be for long.” Commander Johnson waits for Matt’s nod. I send him a sympathetic look from across the table.
“Sorry Matt, he did say it wasn’t long though” I say to him through the mind link. He flashes me a half-hearted smile and continues to study the material in his folder.
When the commander reaches me he tosses me a file which I open quickly and begin to scan through.
“Ella, you will be leading a team of four to go and assist a small pack who are experiencing continual rogue wolf attacks. I understand the Alpha and Beta are very strong and are running things well but the location and small size of the pack are making them a target. The council thinks it’s within their best interest that we send someone to check their security protocols and training regimes to make sure they are ready to withstand any further or larger scale attacks. We also need to find out why the rogues are so fixated on this pack. There’s got to be a deeper motive here and we need to know what it is.” The Commander then goes on to unravel a map of the packs territory and continues to point out areas where rogues have been sighted along with areas for extra security measures.
“I trust you’ll study these and come up with a few ideas to help their situation.”
“Of course Commander Johnson” I nod respectfully.
“Good, you’ll be taking Harvey, Sam and Kiera with you for assistance”
I cringe inwardly at the mention of Kiera’s name. She’s a great warrior but something about her giddy and over the top nature bugs me.
The room begins to empty as we all split up to pack our bags and prepare for our missions at hand.
“Look at you with a team to lead on your first assignment. I guess I’ll see you in a few weeks when you come back to base.” Matt smirks at me.
“I’m proud of you Ella Bella!” He whispers in my ear sneakily.
Just as I’m about to spin around and confront him he smacks my ass and winks at me while walking off with the rest of his small team.
I laugh to myself as I head to my room to pack. I’ll definitely miss Matt and his cheeky ways but I’m so excited to get stuck in.
