Vern
Post my return, I had been bothered due to what I had seen while visiting His Holiness. I could still not decipher what the Realms Wheel was trying to tell me. I could not ask much as my break-up with Emily had adversely affected me. Sometimes I was too tired of all that this life entailed. I wish that things were simpler. As I sighed once more, my inability to contact Emily left me annoyed. I failed to understand how powerful she had become in the span of a few months, that she could block our link.
Was she really set on becoming a warrior, I wondered. I had hoped that my mate would live comfortably. A warrior lived on the edge.
“We can never lose her,” said Drachenne.
“I know but….”
“But what….”
“Drachenne Emily is the heiress of the Solar Realm.”
“I don’t care, Vern. She is our mate first. Our bond is stronger than the bond she’d share with anyone else.”
It was hard to drive some sense into my dragon. Force would not help our cause. She was ‘The Honorable Deity’s’ granddaughter and also my senior’s child. For Emily, her only living relative mattered. Moreover, I remembered that my senior had always respected his mother-in-law.
Flashback
She is strange Vern. The usual impression is one of a woman who lacks feelings. In reality, she cares and when rude, has a solid premise.”
End
My feelings were mixed. I had never known that a time would come when I would dawdle over simple matters and love would flummox me more than any other mysterious happening in the Supernatural Dimension. I had to meet Emily. Our journey ahead might be difficult but, I was sure that the two of us might be able to clear the misunderstandings between her grandmother and my mother. I hoped that both would give their blessings when we married.
“Sort out things with our mate first.”
“Thanks for the reminder, Drachenne. I’d be clueless without your guidance.”
“Stop being sarcastic, Vern King. Both of us know that your foolishness has landed us in this trouble.”
“Drachenne….”
“Vern King, you better get our mate back.”
Even without a reminder, I was ready to leave but, Ri’s arrival interrupted my plan.
“Prince Vern, your presence is required at the formal dinner today.”
Engrossed as I was, I had totally forgotten about the dinner tonight. However, within a second I decided that meeting Emily was more important. Both my heart and Drachenne felt that there had been some misunderstanding…..
“But, you did sleep with Liang, Vern.”
Drachenne’s interruption reminded me that sooner or later, I might have to confront my rashness.
“Let us get our mate back first, Drachenne. I will be honest. I am sure that she will forgive us once she realizes our sincerity.”
“I hope so. Don’t forget she could be as cold as The Honorable Deity if she wished to be.”
For the first time in my life I was scared. Emily’s family background surpassed mine. The mate bond did not have any hold over her. I wondered how difficult the road ahead would be. Would she forgive my mistake?
“Vern,” I was interrupted by Drachenne again.
“Stop fretting over things beyond your control. First go and meet our lovely mate.”
“Stop nagging.”
Dracheenne was understandably angered into silence as I flew out to search for her. I was ready to face the consequences of missing the dinner post my return.
Aneglur Realm
“Keresa has already announced that a formal dinner to cement the alliance would take place Great King.”
“Very good, you may leave, aunt.”
Even though he had been unable to figure out the reason, the Ancient Fairy’s son had already informed me that keeping the dragon prince away from his mate was in our interests.
Flashback
“Great King…….the planetary movements reveal that the dragon prince’s powers are set to increase. This can only happen if he gets together with his mate. You must ensure that the two never unite. This is only possible if Magister medicinae can get the prince together with another dragon female.”
“You are overestimating the mate bond fairy.”
“Stars don’t lie. Great King the Stars have already said that the prince and his mate, if together, will rule the world.”
End
I had barely controlled myself from killing the fairy at that time.
Vern King had a trace of Aneglur within him. No one but I alone knew that only when the Aneglur part of the dragon prince was completely awakened could we move ahead with our plan. He was my cousin and, as long as he remained loyal, he could manage the affairs of the Dragon Realm. For my plan to succeed, it was important that he did not get together with his mate.
I laughed when Vitra speca, a mirror that allowed me a peak into the Dragon Realm, showed Vern King approaching the boundaries of his realm. Vern King could not leave tonight.
“Fumum fulgur tonitruum…..” I chanted, invoking my powers- smoke, lightning and thunder create obstacles in the prince’s path. I could no longer see the dragon prince flying out. He had been stopped by my abilities. No dragon could get through this storm. Smoke hampered a dragon’s ability to see, while thunder and lightning would destroy a dragon’s fire if it chose to fly.
I smiled and was quite satisfied with how evil my reflection was. I particularly detested the high and mighty noble characters……..my experiences in life had taught me that inherent evilness hid behind a façade of virtue, generosity and sincerity. Power alone ensures a person’s loyalty. Only when I was the most powerful could I have the Supernatural Dimension at my feet. Only then, in the face of subservience of all would I be satisfied.
For my purpose to succeed, I needed that girl. The true potential in my life could be unleashed when we unite. I laughed and as I looked around the guards, the smoke followers and the puppet slave fairy shivered.
I approached one of them when a stinking smell greeted me. I unleashed my anger and ordered the slave fairy to kill him. The follower died and my hyenas came to clean him up. I looked around.
“Be scared. It is good that you are afraid. As long as you work well, I will keep you. If you fail to satisfy me, I might kill you or watch my pets enjoying you during meal time as your tears roll down and you beg for mercy. ”
I was amused and as the hall resonated with my laughter, I looked at the Vitra spec and said, “Vern King, you are a kid for me. Since your mother wants you to attend dinner tonight, behave yourself. I do not like disobedient boys.”
Vern King
I was not an ordinary dragon. His Holiness had personally trained me and transferred some powers to me. When thunder and lightning blocked my path ahead, I could have broken through. However, having guessed that these had been artificially created, I chose to return.
“Be careful of not revealing the true level of your abilities till the right time,” I recalled His Holiness’s words.
“The Aneglur King has infiltrated our realm, Vern,” spoke Drachenne.
“I have never doubted your judgement, Drachenne. You know what this means, don’t you?”
“For now, we must not try to meet our mate.”
“With traitors around, our mate will never be safe.”
“Then find out the defector.”
“Don’t worry, I will.”
I was sure that the Nature Dragons or the Sky Dragons, personally trained by me and approved of by His Holiness, had not switched their loyalties. I had to meet my half-uncle and Ser. My uncle may or may not choose to help but Ser……he might be able to throw some light, into what could have happened.
The Sword Lady
“May I come in?”
“To what do I owe this honor, vampire prince……?”
“You’re being too polite, Sword Lady. As my superior, you do not need to greet me. In fact, you can also ask me to return.”
“I won’t ask you to go back, but I will not offer you tea or coffee either.”
“We are Supernatural beings, Sword Lady. Since when did you pick up the Mortal Dimension’s etiquette?”
“Oh, I have been in touch with some exceptional supernatural beings. They loved to have both,” said I, recalling Azarius’s obsession with both. Emily too loved these drinks.
“Is it Emily,” asked the vampire prince.
“You are partially correct,” said I.
There was no need for small talk. To make things easier, I asked “Why are you here Jake? I am sure that both of us have limited time and you are not interested in talking about the weather.”
“True Sword Lady, I have my reason. Why did you ask Emily to embark on a warrior’s journey?”
“Ask….are you sure, prince? With your previous experiences, you must know that no one can be asked or forced to undertake this journey. It is out of one’s own volition that one decides to walk the path.”
“In that case, all the young enthusiasts should be accepted by you as a disciple.”
“Vampire prince, I reject them because I know that they will not last a single day”
“Oh, in that case, you have extraordinary faith in the girls’ ability.”
“Yes I do. She is young and inexperienced but there is a lot of potential to grow. Her abilities need to be polished. One day her light will illuminate all that comes in contact with her. Be prepared not to be dazzled by her then.”
“I do not doubt Emily’s abilities but, Sword Lady Emily did not undertake any training. Moreover, she grew up in the Mortal Dimension.”
“I am aware…”
“Even then…”
“Azarius too grew up there.”
“Both had different sets of experiences. A part of Emily’s powers were sealed a few years after her birth.”
“I have suspected this for a long time. But, this makes it even more essential for her to embark on this journey.”
“Sword Lady you…”
“Her dormant powers will awaken during the course of this journey. If possible, she will gain powers the likes of which can’t be comprehended by anyone today. And……for all those of us who have her best interests at heart, we should toughen up as well. Let her fall. Let her make mistakes. Let her learn. She will mature into a fine queen one day.”
“It seems as if you have it all planned out.”
“Yes I have.”
Jake
“Why are you reluctant, Jake? Isn’t she your friend?”
My mother and she had once been comrades in arms and the two respected each other. The Sword Lady’s intelligence did not surprise me and her words forced me to consider things I had previously acknowledged. I remained quite thinking of all that The Sword Lady had said. Emily was different. Though weak, she never gave into bullying at her school in the Mortal Dimension. At the same time, upon being betrayed, she took a second to cut off her ties with her best friend Rita. Life had been unkind and yet she maintained her optimism.
She was silly but possessed courage that others never would. And when she avoided confrontations she was actually taking a step back to move ahead unimpeded. What others would consider cowardice was actually intelligence. There was nothing more to talk to the Sword Lady now.
I got up to leave. My doubts dispelled and fear allayed. As I reached the door, The Sword Lady called out to me, “What do you think, Jake?”
We smiled and knew that both of us would be there by her side till death.
Nevertheless, I wanted to speak my mind once. We were on the same side and both of us would be helping Emily’s ascent. As such, before stepping out, I said, “Sword Lady…I will support her.”
