Chapter 1 Flash Marriage
"Have you mentioned Rupert to Julia?" my sister-in-law's voice was like a sharp dagger, piercing the tranquil air.
"How could I possibly agree! Your distant cousin, no offense, is nearly thirty, still idling about every day, with an air about him that Julia could never fancy!" My brother's voice carried a tinge of helplessness, trying to quell the flames of his wife's anger.
"What's so bad about Rupert? Their family is filthy rich! So much money they could knock someone unconscious! I'm about to give birth here, and if Julia doesn't marry soon, who do you think will take care of the newborn? It's unheard of to get married and still have to take care of a child..." My sister-in-law's complaints were relentless, bombarding my brother's patience without mercy.
And there stood Julia Wilde, at the doorstep, her heart feeling as if it were being tightly clenched by something.
With their parents gone too soon, all they had left was the small house that she and her brother guarded together. They had depended on each other until his wife came along. Soon after, my sister-in-law became pregnant, and the house began to bustle, the establishment of the baby's room making the already cramped space even more constrained.
My sister-in-law's intentions were clear as day, solely focused on marrying Julia off to our distant cousin Rupert. His family was indeed wealthy, with the label of nouveau riche practically glittering at their door. Rupert's gaze always made her uncomfortable, his eyes assessing her as if she were merchandise for sale.
Julia knew she could no longer be a burden to her brother. But if she were to marry, why not choose Simon Kent, the one who truly stirred her heart?
Thus, Julia Wilde hurried to the hospital, pushed open the door to the ward, gently placed the fruit by the bed, then lifted her head and looked steadfastly at Uncle Kent:
"Uncle Kent, about that matter you mentioned last time, is it too late to agree now?"
"Not at all, not at all!" Uncle Kent's eyes instantly brightened, he nodded eagerly, a satisfied smile hanging on his lips: "The young man is here today as well, how about you two have a chat?"
Julia turned around, and there it was, her gaze meeting Simon Kent's deep eyes. This was the first time she truly saw Simon Kent up close.
Not long ago, Uncle Kent was involved in a car accident. The kind-hearted Julia, by a twist of fate, took him to the hospital. When Uncle Kent woke from his coma, he eagerly grabbed his life-saver, wanting to introduce his son Simon to her.
It turned out that the family elder, Grandma Kent, lying on her sickbed, yearned to see her grandson settle down and start a family. Poor Simon had always been going it alone, without even a girlfriend to speak of. Uncle Kent was at his wits' end, searching high and low for a match.
Julia had previously caught a glimpse of Simon's photo, and without going into detail, his looks were unfairly handsome. But upon meeting him in person, she couldn't help but be a little startled.
Mr. Simon Kent, dressed in a black shirt and white pants, wearing gold-rimmed glasses, exuded an indescribable air of nobility. His eyes and brows revealed a charming demeanor, a high nose bridge, thin and cold lips; he had a contradictory allure of a dapper scoundrel yet not lacking in grace.
"Simon, this is Julia I mentioned to you. She just agreed to get the marriage certificate with us as soon as possible." Uncle Kent's voice was filled with barely concealed excitement.
The life-saver Julia nodded awkwardly: "Mr. Kent, I hear you're looking for a quick marriage partner to put Grandma Kent at ease. What do you think of me?"
Simon Kent frowned slightly, pushed his glasses up, and reminded her deliberately: "Miss Wilde, you should think this through. I've had some trouble with my previous job and am now earning a living driving a taxi, with limited income."
Tai Kent, who was standing by, was itching to throw this nonsense-spewing youngster out.
But the life-saver Julia didn't notice Uncle Kent's expression and answered with a smile: "That's fine, I'm just an ordinary teacher, but my income is decent, and I'm self-sufficient. After we marry, I won't interfere with your life, and if needed, we can get to know each other slowly..."
She understood that the perfect partner wasn't easy to come by. Simon Kent at least had a pleasing appearance and seemed compatible with her. Considering Uncle Kent's kindness, his son probably wouldn't be too far off. For the life-saving grace, if they really became a family in the future, Uncle Kent wouldn't mistreat her.
In marriage, choosing the right person is important, but the family you marry into is also key. As for being an Uber driver... she sneakily glanced at Simon Kent, thinking she might encourage him to try out as a male model or actor, develop a side business, because that face was indeed a bit wasted.
"Listen!" Tai Kent breathed a sigh of relief and said to Simon Kent: "A girl as beautiful and kind as Julia is hard to come by, what more could you want? A goddess from the heavens?"
Simon Kent scrutinized the life-saver Julia and had to admit she was quite attractive. Delicate features, a hint of allure in her eyes, a cool and captivating gaze, yet her demeanor emitted warmth and tranquility.
"Are you really willing to marry me?" Simon Kent asked without betraying any emotion.
The life-saver Julia nodded affirmatively: "If you have any conditions, just put them forward, and I'll do my best to comply."
Her straightforwardness made Simon Kent take another look at her. In fact, he had investigated Julia's background and knew she was an ordinary person. Since his dad had retired from the scene, she couldn't possibly know the true identity of the Kent family, nor would she know that he was actually the power behind the Kent family. So why would she agree to marry someone who was just an Uber driver? Was it really just for his looks?
After some thought, Simon Kent finally agreed: "We can get the certificate, but I can't take advantage of you. A prenuptial property agreement is a must."
Considering the Kent family's status in L city, signing a prenuptial agreement was a given. The life-saver Julia was unconcerned with these details, and felt that having a legal document to clarify both parties' rights and responsibilities would save a lot of trouble: "No problem, I'll sign."
The two left the hospital, took care of the prenuptial agreement, retrieved their household registration books, and headed to the Civil Affairs Bureau to complete the marriage formalities. Arriving at the parking lot, the life-saver Julia curiously looked at the car in front of her, puzzled: "Can an Uber driver afford such a luxury car?"
Simon Kent explained lightly: "It's a friend's car; I rent it by the month."
The life-saver Julia had an epiphany, and they both got into the car, heading to the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Standing next to Simon Kent, who was a head taller than her, Julia suddenly stopped: "Mr. Kent, although we've reached a consensus and I won't interfere with your life post-marriage, I still hope that during our marriage, you'll remain faithful and not have overly intimate relations with other women. After all, loyalty is the foundation of marriage."
Simon Kent looked at her, somewhat surprised, and responded calmly: "I hope you can do the same."
Julia nodded confidently: "Don't worry, I'm not in the habit of having my feet in two boats."
Side by side, they entered the Civil Affairs Bureau. In less than half an hour, Simon Kent held the freshly printed marriage certificate and turned to look at Julia, his brow slightly furrowed. Just like that, with two red booklets, she became his wife?
Julia, however, wasn't too sentimental but instead felt relieved. They returned to the hospital to inform Uncle Kent.
