The ICU was quiet, which I supposed was a good thing. A friendly looking nurse with a warm smile greeted us as we stepped off the elevator. She motioned us over, introduced herself as Marcy, and said she’d been looking after Josie through the night. “Your sister is doing really well, Mr. Anderson. She’s showing signs of waking up,” Marcy said brightly. Zack barely got a thank-you out before he was jogging down the hall. Marcy just smiled and turned back to her duties. I followed quickly, wanting to see Josie myself, but I stopped when I got to the doorway. Zack was leaning on his sister’s bed and talking a mile a minute. His voice was animated in a way I’d never heard him speak. The words didn’t matter. I let them wash over me without paying attention to what he was actually saying. Jos
