He had come very near on a number of occasions to deciding he must marry her. In fact he thought of it more often than he would admit to himself. Now he felt that he was like a horse shying at an unexpected object in the road. He wondered what Nicholas would think of her. Would he believe Millie was the other part of his soul? Then he told himself that he did not know whether or not Millie had a soul. It was something they had not discussed and indeed he would have felt embarrassed to do so.
