Chapter 6Speaking in French the Duke expostulated strongly with the peasants.
“I will give you what money I have on me but, as you well know, this practice of holding up travellers is strongly condemned both by the Police and by the Magistrates. You will find yourselves in serious trouble for behaving in such a manner.”
The peasants did not answer, but simply started to walk forward leading the Duke’s horse and Selina’s.
“Let go of my bridle!” the Duke demanded.
He wondered whether he should use his whip on the two men holding his horse and thought that if he did so he could quite easily free himself and get away from them.
