The Duke could not help thinking with a slightly amused smile that no other woman of his acquaintance would have accepted such a situation in such a matter of fact manner.
He realised, as he had done all day, that Selina treated him in very much the same way as she must have treated her father.
She gave him companionship, and not even at this moment, did she appear to think of him as being a young man or even – a sobering thought – attractive from a masculine point of view.
“What do you not understand?” the Duke asked in a deep voice.
“It’s very puzzling,” Selina answered. “When we reached that house last night, there was a terrible commotion because the ship had been late and they were expecting us several days earlier.”
She paused.
