CHAPTER 12 Sandy was just coming out of the back rooms when Kennedy and her friends returned to the ER lobby. Woong ran up to her, apparently in a more congenial mood after Nick bought him two hotdogs, a bag of Cheetos, a big fruit salad (“on account of it having lots of good, healthy vitamins”), and a giant soft pretzel with double portions of melted cheese product. Sandy bent over her son and gave him a hug. “How’s my boy? Are you minding Miss Kennedy?” Woong nodded. “I beat Nick at paper, scissors, rock,” he boasted. “Except this is a new version. It’s got a lizard and a funny alien guy with pointy ears who makes his fingers all funny.” Woong tried to replicate the hand gesture. Sandy looked clueless, but she brushed the stray hair out of her eyes and tried to offer everyone a smile
