He was then aware that Melva was approaching him.
Quite suddenly he wanted to run away.
He whipped up his horse.
As he already had several lengths start, he was back in the paddock some way ahead of her.
She galloped in.
Then, without checking the speed of Dragonfly, she took him straight to the highest jump.
The Earl parted his lips to stop her.
They had ridden quite a long way and it would be a mistake to try the jumps again without warning.
But he was too late.
Melva put Dragonfly at the jump and he rose to the challenge splendidly.
He did not, however, land as well as he had before.
As he staggered on impact, Melva fell forward in her saddle.
For a moment the Earl thought that she would fall over the horse’s head.
He then gave a shout of terror.
