CHAPTER TWOThe Earl stared at Nanny. “What have you thought of, Nanny?” he asked. She drew in her breath. Then she said, “You must elope!” There was silence until the Earl asked, “I don’t understand, Nanny. What are you saying?” “If His Grace thinks you’ve eloped, you obviously then can’t be expected to marry anyone else. If you just go away and disappear, he’ll search everywhere and bring you back.” “But I have no one to elope with!” he protested. “In fact, as you well know, Nanny, I have no intention of marrying anyone.” “I know that,” Nanny persisted as if he was being rather stupid. “But, if you say that you’ll elope and then disappear, His Grace’ll think you’re with someone you’re goin’ to marry.” “Are you suggesting I go alone?” the Earl asked as if he was finding it too di
