CHAPTER FOURThe clothes that had come down from London were waiting for Shamara upstairs in one of the bedrooms. The housekeeper was present to help her try on one dress that was appropriate for travelling. As she looked at herself in the mirror, Shamara could hardly believe that she was the same person who had worn the drab grey of the orphanage for two years. The Marquis had already given Mr. Turner’s assistant explicit instructions as to what he should buy. The shops did not have any young girl’s dresses in the bright colours that he thought would become her. Instead there were some white gowns, which the housekeeper was busily packing into a trunk, one in pink and another in a pale green. The dress she was to put on immediately was also green, but a little darker with pretty lace
