First Successful Day

Bethany’s P.O.V.

“He will be out of the city for two days”, I chirped while telling Rose about Hunter. She smiled and then shook her head a little. “He often goes out due to business and you will be with him from the next time. This time, he is not taking you with him because you are still in the learning process”, Rose said to me and my smile immediately vanished. I pointed a finger towards me with a wide open mouth but nothing came out. “What? Didn’t you read the whole contract before signing it?” she asked me in a concerned tone and I looked at her while blinking hard. I was now on the verge of a breakdown.

I was so happy when Hunter asked me to clear his schedule for the next two days. He told me that he would be out of the city for business purposes and I was so happy. Only I knew how I managed to finish those meetings with him without making any mistakes. His cold gazes were enough to make me feel like crap all day. I got stomach cramps due to anxiety and I was really proud that I somehow managed to keep myself straight in front of him. Now she was telling me that I had to travel with him too? Can’t I just stay here… inside the office and someone else goes out with him?

“What? Why are you looking at me as if I have sentenced you to death?” Rose asked me while looking at me in confusion. I just blinked at her because I was really feeling that I was going to be slaughtered by Hunter Knight any time soon. Where would he bury me after killing me or he would throw me in a bin… in a sea or?????

“Hey, Bethany”, I came out of my trance when someone snapped her fingers in front of me. I looked up and saw Rose looking at me with worry. “What happened?” I asked her immediately. “What happened? See yourself first”, she scolded me and I jerked my head backward. She huffed and then walked away to her cubicle. I scratched the back of my neck in confusion. “Girl… what were you even thinking, huh?” I looked to the other side when the other secretary, Melissa asked me in a worried tone. “What happened? Did I do something wrong?” I asked her in a hushed tone, still confused.

“You were ghastly paled a few seconds ago”, she told me and I immediately touched my face. “Was that so?” I asked her and then opened the camera of my phone to see my face. I faced palmed myself when I saw that I was really looking pale right now. I was so engrossed in my thoughts of getting slaughtered that I forgot that I am still in the office right now. “Sorry… I was thinking… thinking about something scary”, I apologized to her and she just looked at me in disbelief. “You are the PA of Hunter Knight. What could be scarier than this?” she suddenly snickered, making me raise my brows in surprise. She was right here though.

We both shared a look and then giggled while putting our hands on our mouths. “Girls… you are still in the office”, Rose yelled and we both giggled once again while hiding our faces in our cubicles. Melissa was right. What could be scarier than being his PA? I was lucky enough that Rose and the secretarial staff here were so helpful. They helped me in everything and that was why I managed to be in my position today. I didn’t know for how long I was going to survive here but I knew one thing more. I was not going to quit on my own. I knew that I had to learn more because everything was completely new to me, but I was a quick learner and I was confident that I would learn soon.

I packed up for the day and left a message for Mr. Knight that I had cleared his schedule for the next two days. I was really happy that I managed to survive today. I felt proud of myself for finishing my first day successfully. I closed my laptop and then put everything in the drawer. After finishing everything I texted Emma that I was heading out now. Emma also got selected but she was going to join the next week. We decided to meet at James’ in the evening. I bid my farewell to everyone before going out of the room.

I went straight to the elevator. Mr. Knight had already gone out of the office. So, I was relieved that I wouldn’t run into him again. Melissa and Rose also came right behind me and we all entered the elevator together. I smiled widely when Emma called me. My best friend was the best. “Hey, girl”, I chirped after picking up the phone and put the phone on my ear. I gave an apologetic look to the people around me as I was a bit loud. Rose and Melissa just shook their heads while smiling a little. Both of them were really sweet and I really liked them.

“O My God…. You are still alive?” I rolled my eyes when Emma exclaimed in disbelief. “Yup… I am very much alive and ready to kick you’re a**”, I spat and heard her laughing aloud. “Coming to James?” she asked me after her laughter died and I nodded. Then I realized that she couldn’t see me. “Yeah… I will be there in the next hour. I am still inside the company but would be out soon”, I told her and then looked at my watch to see the time. “Great… James also has a big order and he needs our help”, she told me further. “Okay… then let’s meet there and we will plan accordingly. My boss is out of the city for the next two days… I guess.. I can use these two days to help him”, I told her and then looked at my side when I felt Rose’s gaze on me.

“My friend… my uncle is a caterer and he has the order to finish… we are helping him”, I explained to Rose and she raised her brows in surprise. “You are a chef?” she asked me in a surprised tone and I smiled sheepishly. “No… actually I am not a chef but I loved baking and cooking. My uncle is a good chef and he is the one who taught me everything”, I told her and she nodded while looking at me in amazement. “It means that we can have anything baked by you, huh?” Melissa asked me this time and I beamed. “Let me see what’s the order today. I will surely bake something for you guys. You help me a lot”, I replied to her with gratitude.

“Aahhh… it’s nothing, honey… we all survive here till today because we help each other and know well whom to help. You… you are different than other girls and that’s why…. We are happy to help you too”, Rose replied to me this time and I beamed once again while showing the full set of my teeth to her. “Hey, girl… I am still waiting for you”, suddenly Emma yelled over the call and I took my tongue between my teeth. “Sorry… sorry… sorry.. honey”, I immediately apologized to Emma but I was not sorry. Why should I be? She could wait for me, right?

Rose and Melissa laughed a little and we exited the elevator together. “Okay… I am heading to the bus station now. I am reaching there”, I said to Emma and then hung up. “You will take the bus?” Rose asked me as she was still walking with me while Melissa went away towards the parking lot. “Yeah… I am not good at driving. So, I take the bus and subways to commute”, I told her truthfully and she nodded in understanding. “Okay… then.. see you tomorrow”, she said and we parted our ways. I took a deep breath inhaling the air outside the company. I felt that a big weight from my shoulders had lifted at this very instant. Working with him is really chaotic with all his cold attitude but I am sure that I would survive here now.

I walked towards the bus station but I had this nagging feeling all the way there that someone was following me or keeping an eye on me. I stopped in my track and looked behind me. I narrowed my eyes and surveyed the whole area behind me. I took a deep breath when I found nothing suspicious still my heart was not at ease right now. I then moved back to my way and started walking towards my destination. There were so many people around me and I am sure that no one would dare to do something in a crowded area. Still, I wanted to ensure that I am not in any danger. So, I started walking beside two elder women who were also heading towards the bus station. I kept on glancing behind me anxiously. It might be just a feeling but what if someone is really following me?
