Mates  Annabella POV “Tell me about werewolf mates, like them,” I decide, pointing to the picture he gave me last night that is now hanging on my wall.  “That is a very good decision Bella Rose,” he murmurs tucking the blankets in around my body. “Werewolves are very interesting creatures. The wolf is much like the person in the sense that it too, needs to grow and mature. A person is born with their wolf already inside.” “Inside?” I ask. “Yes, so the wolf and the human are technically one in the same. They share a mind and can see through each other’s eyes. So, your wolf is with you from the day you are born. The first several years of your life though, your wolf stays inside, too young to come forward. On your thirteenth birthday is when your wolf is first able to come out. So the couple days leading up to it, your wolf will start talking to you in your mind and you’ll start to feel more energy. Then, on your birthday, you have your first shift.” “Does it hurt them?”  “The first few times it is very long and painful, but after a little while, it takes no time at all and is painless.” I frown at that.  “So then the wolf can find a mate?”  “Not yet, the wolf is still too young and immature. Much like their teenage counterpart. Over the following five years, the human and the wolf get to bond; learning about each other and talking to each other, building strength together. Then, on your eighteenth birthday, a wolf is fully matured and able to find their mate. Some wolves, grew up with their mates as their best friend and some search for years all over the country to find their mate.”  “Why?” “A wolf’s mate is their other half, their soulmate. You simply cannot be complete without your mate. And once you find your mate, leaving is not an option. Wolves are very possessive, especially the males, and when they find their mate all they want to do is become one with them. Then they will be able to talk to each other through their minds and they’ll feel each other’s emotions and feel when the other is in pain.” “Woah, that sounds intense.”  “It is. It's said that the worst pain you can ever feel is your mate dying. You feel, not only the pain your mate feels, but also the worst pain you could experience in your chest from having half of your soul ripped away. No other pain compares. Many wolves go crazy or kill themselves because the grief and sorrow is just too much.” I look up at dad but he is staring at the painting on the wall. “What about them? The silver wolf lost his mate when the white wolf died right? But he lived and left. Why didn’t he go crazy?”  “Well, princess, that is because he had something else to live for. He had to protect his daughter.”  “I hope I find someone who loves me like that someday,” I say dreamily closing my eyes.  “You will, Annabella, don’t worry about that.” And with that, he kisses me on the forehead and quietly slips out of my room as I slip into a dreamful sleep.
