The story starts by giving the reader context to what fuels the main character’s, Tom, vengeance. While he was washing clothes, his mother-in-law threw a piece of clothing at him and disrespectfully commanded him to wash it.

Enraged yet calm, Tom requested that she hand over the clothes in a basket instead of throwing them at him since he wasn’t a servant and her son-in-law. However, this initiated a chain of degradation as Elizabeth called him to trash repetitively in numerous ways.

Tom had lived the worst three years of life in the Scott family and never even go to touch his wife, Phoebe. She arrived at the scene and asked her mother not to throw clothes at him, though she too was disappointed in what type of ‘trash’ her husband was and looked at him accordingly.

She then told her mother to come downstairs as her father was waiting for them. They moved away from Tom, who heard in on the conversation without them knowing. Elizabeth asked Phoebe if it was okay for her to be with an ugly fat man, to which Phoebe replied that she had to do it for her family and that her husband was incapable.

While he heard them backbiting on his name, he restrained himself from screaming to Phoebe that he was capable of protecting her, he was the noble second son of the Howard Family after all but was expelled from it for false allegations.

Phoebe left with her family to meet the family that was willing to give them 20 million dollars in exchange that the fat and ugly old man of the family getting to be with one of their beauties. On the table, Phoebe’s sisters refused to be with Mr. Cook, though Phoebe accepted despite being a husband.

Part 1: Tom’s Comeback in the Vengeful Son-in-Law

Tom Going from Rags to Riches in Vengeful Son-in-Law

While Phoebe stays busy with her affairs, not even considering that Tom could be the slightest of use, Tom receives a call from his former butler who called him ‘sir’. That was an unfamiliar and alien way of addressing Tom from his perspective since he was treated and called trash for quite a while.

His butler informs him that his grandfather had passed away, and the allegations that caused him to be expelled from the Howard family were lifted. He had received 70% of his grandfather’s inheritance, and upon Tom’s request of checking his balance, the butler was unable to do so since there was too much money.

With Tom’s regained power and stature, he was able to make a difference in his family and Phoebe’s life. However, before he can break the news to Phoebe, he faces the challenge of having to deal with the inevitable realization that his in-laws still hate him and would only like him for his wealth and newfound stature.

Part 2: Main Theme of Vengeful Son-in-Law

Tom and Brian Intensely Arguing in Vengeful Son-in-Law

The main theme of this novel can be derived from empowerment and going from nothing to everything. Tom was broke, rode a cheap bike, and had no power or authority whatsoever at the beginning of the novel. He was humiliated, abused, and degraded in every possible way yet he

still maintained his composure and respect for his in-laws. When he gains his grandfather’s huge inheritance, he has to face the challenges that come with it like dealing with the attitudes of his inferior in-laws.

Forgiveness and acceptance are the results of Tom’s empowerment, which also acts as a theme of the novel.

Tom had no obligation to keep up with his family’s degradation any longer considering what type of person he had become and what his position was in the Howard family. However, he still considered Phoebe his wife and his family, since he slowly started falling in love with her after his marriage.

Despite the naive nature of Tom’s initial character, he starts to embrace who he is and develops a ‘vengeful’ personality which the readers anticipated from the title of the novel. The author consistently teases the reader with Tom’s inability to display just how powerful he is, though when he puts it to use, the level of satisfaction derived from exacting his revenge can be insurmountable.

Part 3: Strengths of Vengeful Son-in-Law

Tom's Compelling Character in Vengeful Son-in-Law

The character growth of Tom, who changes from a succumbing and pathetic son-in-law to a cunning and determined man who will do anything to seek justice, is one of the novel’s strongest points. His life story is a testament to the human spirit’s resiliency and the strength of tenacity in the face of difficulty.

The portrayal of the Scott family as ruthless and cunning individuals who will go to any lengths to protect their wealth and reputation is another strength of The Vengeful Son-in-Law.

The book makes a sobering observation of how corrupt power can be and the lengths people will go to keep it. This intensifies each scene that features Tom’s interactions with the family and influences how he behaves toward them.

Perhaps a broader way to describe the biggest strength of this novel is that it’s intense. You’re constantly going to be on the edge of your seat as the author keeps teasing you with more and more plot points that could go in any direction. The heat, the intensity of this novel is unrivaled and consistent.
