Reaper of the Drifting Moon is a Korean wuxia novel, written by the popular author Woo Gak, and is available to read on the various platforms and adapted to various forms of media. It’s a fast paced novel with readable contents, tolerable violent scenes, and spellbinding characters.

Contrary to popular tropes in the wuxia universe, Reaper of the Drifting Moon adapted a concept that I have never seen before. Assassins and magic in one storyline? Now that’s something. I never thought that’s possible. That alone speaks volume for its quality, and the thrill that it might bring into the readers.

The plot follows Pyo Wol—an orphan who was kidnapped by a group of assassins for a mission that will overthrow the society and perhaps upend the whole world. By forcing them to undergo life-threatening trials, and soul-soucking lessons, children (who are supposed to break their own innocence) are reshaped into merciless reapers. It’s the fate that awaits Pyo Wol, and no matter how much he resisted, he knew he’ll end up as a savage soon enough.

Reaper of the Drifting Moon - Pyo Wol

His background, and true nature of his capabilities are left behind as a mystery in the purpose of keeping the reader’s teeth clawed in the story and immersed with its progression. It was a tactic proven to be effective and I can vouch for that. I couldn’t contain my excitement and thrill as I watched Pyo Wol grew from an innocent young boy to the most feared assassin. Will he be able to reach his goal? What was his true background, and why the assassins chose him to be a successor? Is it connected with his identity and his inborn skills that they wished to make use of?

You’d be able to answer these for yourself once you give it a chance.

Part 1: The Author of Reaper of the Drifting Moon

Reaper of the Drifting Moon - The Author

Woo Gak is the pen name of the author behind the Reaper of the Drifting Moon. It’s only one of his remarkable novels of his writing career, and for a newcomer in the industry, he has a talent of an experienced one. It shows in the way he exposed his ideas, and in the manner he gave birth to his imaginative mind. He creates empathetic characters, not really going into the details of their background, and infects them with flaws to make them as realistic as possible. Information about Woo Gak has been kept away from the public. All what the internet could offer is that he’s Korean, an avid reader of web novels and a fan of comics.

His works include The Legend of the Northern Blade, Martial Artist Lee Gwak, Memoir of the God of War, Reaper of the Drifting Moon and Fist Demon of Mount Hua. Each scored a passing 4 stars, and has impacted the world of readers for years since they were brought to public. He’s known for following a plot that includes a weak-to-strong hero, barely involving him with a romantic love interest. He updates frequently, and if you want to get to know him more, you can access his account on a Kakao page.

Part 2: Hot Chapters from Reaper of the Drifting Moon

Chapter 1

Reaper of the Drifting Moon - The Underground

Pwo Yol woke up in an unfamiliar room, his memories in haze and his body is in a lot of pain. He couldn’t properly remember how he had gotten to a place he had never seen before. Unable to move and see, all Pyo Wol could do while he lie awake is to deduce and make a guess. Even his mind, though, was betraying him. All his body was telling him was severe pain. Time passed and the scenario continued like that. He’s held captive in some fort of a basement without a hint of what was happening. Until someone finally made him drink water.

Chapter 10

Reaper of the Drifting Moon - Thunder Technique

The first phase of their training has begun. Cries of protests have dissipated, replaced by the children’s acceptance to their fate. A new technique was introduced to them. Called as Thunder-Splitting Cultivation Technique, it’s a cultivation method that allows the user to be wiser, stronger and use three swords at a time. Through the practice and determination, anyone is capable to master. If, by chance, they discovered its full potential, they can be invisible in a fight and it will make it easy for them to overpower their enemies. Pyo-wol thought it would be easy for him to navigate. His hunch was wrong when fought duels with the official assassins and custodian. His failure to master within the time frame he set up flamed his conviction to be better.

Chapter 20

Reaper of the Drifting Moon - The Sunrise

Seven years of being captives, and the children were finally removed from the underground. The view of the sun became stranged to them. They stared at it until it finally hurt their eyes. But because their eyes were confined for too long in the darkness, the children was unable to tolerate the sun. The assassins caged them up again in wagons, and transported them into a new hideout. Days after they broke free, their captors provided them with swords and weapons. That’s when Pyo Wol realized they’re out there to do the real mission they’ve been preparing for. A sense of overwhelming fear rushed through his veins the moment the thought struck him right in the head.

Part 3: Simple Sentiments on Reaper of the Drifting Moon and a Similar Book on Dreame

Who wouldn’t want a story that covers the grow of an assassin?

The Reaper of the Drifting Moon covers all of my favorite tropes in an action/fantasy novel. It did justice to the concept it established. Though the author’s writing style was somewhat intolerable because of some minor errors on grammars and exposition, it was still a fun experience. I definitely urge you to read this one. It’s enjoyable, exciting, and thrilling. You’d absolutely love it!

If the idea of assassins seemed appealing to you, here’s another book with the same concept and plot.
