The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren is a contemporary enemies-to-lovers romance-style book about an ill-lucky Olive who just happens to be the polar opposite of her twin sister Ami.

Right from time, Olive had always known she had ill luck. She already knew this right from six years old when she got stuck on an arcade game crane when trying to retrieve a toy she’d won that wouldn’t just fall off.

She’d been stuck there for two hours before the fire department phoned to rescue her, and successfully extracted her.

It didn’t even get any better knowing that journalists had carefully documented the process. And thanks to them there were five hundred thousand plus views on a video on YouTube concerning that incident. This was just one of the piling list of lucky moments she’d had growing up; ranging from breaking a leg, being peed on by a dog, getting crapped on by a bird, being struck by lightning when she was sixteen, to losing her job.

Olive was never like her twin sister who was so ridiculously lucky that she’d won the lottery and even won a car before. And here she was preparing her twin sister for her wedding while she didn’t even have a man of her own.

It made her feel a pang of guilt that her sister was having a successful wedding sponsored by a lot of free materials she’d won. But she still loved her, even if Ami was a perfectionist.

Refusing to add this to her ill-luck list, Olive had decided to still rock her very tight chief bridesmaid gown that desperately hugged her curves putting her cleavage on full display.

The only thing that bothered her was that her nemesis who also happened to be Dane’s (Ami’s husband) best man and older brother could be ogling her. They had a bitter history of him always picking on her.

Putting that thought aside, Olive went ahead to give it her best to make sure her sister’s wedding, which was sponsored by free materials, was a blast.

At first, everything seems to be going smoothly according to Ami’s plan. Even Ethan (Dane’s older brother and best man) manages to give a funny sweet toast that doesn’t make it look like he’s mocking everyone.

But halfway into Olive’s speech, she gets interrupted by texts from her cousins, followed by a huge retching roar of people emptying their bowels. How unfortunate. At least the wedding had been a blast although not in the way she’d planned it

After some investigation after the wedding, it’d been surmised that the two hundred-plus people who had been infected at the wedding were throwing up due to food poisoning from eating the contaminated seafood that was served at the wedding reception.

Everything seemed to be resolved except for the fact that they were all likely to start getting better in a week’s time or less. Refusing to accept this, Ami decided to give Olive the honeymoon ticket she’d won better her sister enjoyed it than she lost it.

It takes a while before she can finally convince her twin sister Olive to participate in this fraud and go on an actual honeymoon with Dane’s brother whom she actually loathes.

Olive considers this offer for a while and then agrees because… why not? She didn’t have a job and wasn’t sick either, so it was better to go on vacation with someone she didn’t like than stay back in this depressing environment.

Part 1: Main Characters ofThe Unhoneymooners

Olive Torres

 The Unhoneymooners book Olive Torres

Olive Torres is Ami Torres’s twin sister. At thirty-two years old, she’s five foot four with dark hair that misbehaves when there’s even a hint of humidity, deep brown eyes, an upturned nose, and a constellation of freckles.

She is curvy and has twelve first female cousins and parents who even though they’ve grown out of love (because her mom caught her dad cheating some years ago) have refused to get divorced.

Unlike her twin sister who is so lucky that she’d won: a street fair, theater tickets, free beers for a year, a makeover, books, movie premiere tickets, a lawnmower, endless t-shirts, stationery, and even a car; Olive was very unlucky on her end that she’d even been struck by lightning when she was sixteen and lived to tell the tale.

Although her parents, inasmuch as they were messy but were financially stable, Olive worked in a pharmaceutical company for six years before she was laid off.

Ethan Thomas

 Christina Lauren The Unhoneymooners Ethan

Ethan Thomas is Dane’s (Ami’s husband) older brother and best friend. He’s tall, handsome, and has blue eyes with unnecessarily long eyelashes.

He’s thirty-four and although two years older than Dane and the Torres sisters, he’s considered to be a jerk and a judgemental prick. It is because of their bad behaviors that made Olive and pretty much everyone dislike him.

After Ami had successfully coaxed her into agreeing to take her spot on her honeymoon, Olive drew the line at the airline fraud. She could do anything but not that one. Because they were meeting a schedule and because she was on a tight budget, Olive decided to settle for an extremely cheap airline.

At the airport with her nemesis Ethan, they argue and nag each other as usual before she receives a call from one of the one too many places she’d applied for a job to be told that she was hired with a moderately fat paycheck too, and that she got to start whenever she found immediately convenient.

Olive feels like she’s dreaming because of her recent stream of luck: not being diagnosed with food poisoning, going on a free vacation to Maui, getting a job, and not being scorned by Ethan when she broke the good news to him.

When it’s time to board their flight, Olive finally understands why their tickets were so cheap.

The thrift jet is so small and narrow that there are only two seats on each side of the aisle. The seats are so small that they can pass for just a bench with an armrest. And it’s so uncomfortable for Olive because her body is practically glued to Ethan’s.

The flight is surprisingly fun for Olive as she gets to make fun of Ethan for being scared of the plane. She even got to mock him for bringing out his lucky penny anytime the plane had turbulence.
