Part 1: Plot Overview of Cruel Romance
The start of their romance is kind of similar to Elizabeth and Darcy’s relationship (from Pride and Prejudice). Unpleasant, and off-putting in so many ways. Misunderstandings and nasty falling-outs are the pretenses of their growing affection. Zuo Zhen is known to be heartless and stoic.
He’s been living up to the impression as a significant number of the notorious triad, devoid of any humanlike emotion. He showed that to Jin Xiu when they first met, and right then, the difference in their character hit off like oil spreading into the vastness of the ocean.
The story begins with Jin Xiu, showing up in front of an immaculate mansion, and asking for the whereabouts of her sister whom she hasn’t seen for decades. Her unexpected arrival brought an ugly impression to the family where her supposed sister is staying. The notion of having distant relatives show up in front of your house out of a sudden is a customary sign of bad luck and exploitation.
Jin Xiu was therefore thrown out, and in the blink of an eye, she became homeless, wandering the streets like a ghost having no clue where to settle.
Zuo Zhen came to the rescue, giving her a place to stay and even a stable work that completely altered Jin Xiu’s miserable life. Zuo Zhen taught her everything she needs to know about the city.
How to drink, how to dance, and how to manipulate every malicious man that would try to catch her attention. Just as Zuo Zhen spares her with kindness, Jin Xiu is taking a particular interest in Ying Dong.
Soon as Jin Xiu began to get comfortable with the life of the city (with the help of Zuo Zhen), she undiscovered some hidden truths about her supposed sister and the background of her god-forsaken family.
At the same time these are all unfolding in front of her eyes, Jin Xiu has also begun to develop some unfamiliar feelings towards Zuo Zhen. It shouldn’t be that way since she already built up her affection towards Ying Dong. She tried to avoid it, but every time Zuo Zhen was around, her feelings are getting more and more fierce. Her restraint came to an end when she uncovers the truth that it was Zuo Zhen who’s her savior and not Ying Dong.
Insatiable desires and uncontrollable romance immediately drew them closer. The love is so good, Jin Xiu thought she was a princess living in a real-life fairytale. However, acquiring fairytales doesn’t always equate to happy endings.
Jin Xiu soon found that as accurate as the stars exploding every ten seconds when Zuo Zhen’s past and job came intervening. Apart from that, Zuo Zhen’s family also turned out to be not fond of their romance. How are they going to go against them is the biggest question. And to know the answer to that, sacrifices must be made first.
Part 2: Introductory Chapters From Cruel Romance
Chapter 1
Jin Xiu arrives in Shanghai with high hopes of finding her sister without encountering any problems. It’s an unexpected visit that even Jin Xiu didn’t know she’d be doing. But desperation and helplessness got the better of her. Hadn’t her mother run away, and her uncle hadn’t fallen ill, she would never consider doing this. She knew very well her sister won’t take her appearance as casually as she hoped. That hunch turns out accurate when her sister showed nothing but apathy upon seeing her. Moreover, her sister expressed utter disdain for what happened to their family, declaring they deserved the misfortune.
Dumbfounded, Jin Xiu begs her to reconsider everything, and maybe help them out of the mess that their mother had gotten into. However, instead of offering help, Ming Zhu insulted her by throwing a large sum of money in her face as though that’s all that pampered Jin Xiu to come all the way there.
She may have been seeking help, and maybe a little amount of money can fulfill that, she never expected she’d be taken as an exploiter. Everything she said is genuine, and what she’s asking won’t take too much of Ming Zhu’s time. And yet she took that on an offensive level. That’s when Jin Xiu realized
On the way out, she accidentally tripped upon Ying Dong. Thankfully, Ying Dong catches her before she could fall onto the ground. Short introductions were made but Jin Xiu was too hurt about what Ming Zhu did that she completely snubbed them all.
That encounter didn’t prove to be the last when Zuo Zhen saw Jin Xiu being beaten by a group of vendors. Zuo Zhen immediately responded as he recognized her as being the woman who introduced herself as Ming Zhu’s sister. He took her and placed them under Ying Dong’s condo, not even bothering to take credit for the heroic act.
Chapter 2
Jin Xiu wakes up in an unfamiliar room, well-tended, and has everything she could ask for. She doesn’t remember anything at first, but all thanks to the helper that assisted her, she was enlightened about what happened. Ying Dong arrives, and Jin Xiu discovers that it was he who rescued her. Jin Xiu instantly admired him.
They’re complete strangers and yet, the way he treated her was way better than her sister did. Ying Dong offered to stay. Jin Xiu adamantly refused, remembering the words of Ming Zhu. As much as it is tempting, she didn’t want to live up to Ming Zhu’s assumption and prove her to be wrong. Eventually, Ying Dong convinces her to stay.
Days passed, and Jin Xiu remained under Ying Dong’s mercy. He frequently visits her to check up on the progress of her health. During those, Jin Xiu learned so much from Ying Dong.
Particularly from Zuo Zhen-the emotionless man who likes to study her with scrutiny. Their interaction was often awkward as Jin Xiu couldn’t bring herself to be comfortable with him. Zuo Zhen offered her some work, and though she was skeptical about the man’s inner motives, she didn’t hesitate to take the risk and agreed.
