It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey is a contemporary small-town romance type book focused on the attraction between internet socialite Piper and Brendan, the broody sea captain of Westport.

Rubbing shoulders with celebrities, clubbing with actors, partying with musicians, and posting for the gram have always been Piper’s number one priority. Growing up in a wealthy and influential family, this has been the only thing she knew was her life. She considered herself an internet sensation.

But here she was, at twenty-eight, almost pleading with Adrian not to dump her just three weeks into what she considered her longest relationship.

Figures she’d taken the relationship which was supposed to be just for fun too seriously and now she was on the receiving end while being tongue-lashed by Adrian who didn’t try to sugarcoat that she didn’t matter and wasn’t as important as she’d made herself to feel.

Trying to save face, Piper had left him with a smile, but at the last minute, she’d suddenly decided to pull a stunt to show Adrian that she was still it girl’ the self-acclaimed internet sensation she believed herself to be. And what better way to prove this than breaking into the Mondrian and hosting a rooftop pool party since it was midnight?

Just like all the bad decisions she’d ever made, this too backfired on her, landing her in jail after they’d made a mess at the hotel. Going home to their mansion in Bel Air with her sister Hannah after she’d made bail, Piper was shocked to know that she was even in deeper trouble because of the stunt she pulled.

The owner of the hotel which she’d messed up with her party was one of her stepdad’s major sponsors. Vexed that she’d turned his hotel into a laughing stock because of the joke her actions made of the hotel’s security, he’d threatened to pull out if she wasn’t censured properly.

And in their own definition of censure, it meant sending her away to a small beach town without sponsoring her carefree life anymore for three months. The aim of this was to teach her a lesson that there was more to life than the internet. Piper didn’t care about that and she tried to charm her way out of this of course it didn’t work.

Piper felt betrayed that their mom was letting her stepdad send her away to Westport to manage a bar her dad owned before he died. But then there was nothing she could do. Had her sister not been stubborn and insisted on following her, she would’ve probably had a breakdown. She was a city girl, what did she know about managing bars?

However, just when she thought things couldn’t get any worse, Piper was thrown aback by the dirty state of the apartment they were supposed to live in.

And then there was the ever-grumpy sea captain who seemed too impatient to see her give up and leave his town. This made her all the more determined to prove both him, Adrian, and her stepdad who had all written her off, wrong.

Part 1: Main Characters of It Happened One Summer

Piper Bellinger

It Happened One Summer Piper Bellinger

Piper is a twenty-eight years old self-acclaimed internet sensation and stepdaughter of Hollywood millionaire Daniel Bellinger. She’s pretty and curvy with blonde hair and blue eyes.

Unlike her sister Hannah who was two years younger than she was, the only thing Piper cared about was partying, posting for the gram, and hanging out with celebrities. Her sister Hannah at least went to college, had a degree, and a good-paying job (which their stepdad got her with his influence of course) but Piper had none of this partly because none of her friends did either.

The aim of going to college as she surmised was to get a degree and a good-paying job. But what did she need any of these for when her stepdad had a shit ton of money and could afford her lifestyle. This had been Piper’s principal until she landed herself in trouble and got sent off to Westport to fend for herself for three months.

Brendan Taggart

It Happened One Summer Brendan Taggart

Brendan Taggart is a rugged sea captain in Westport. He’s tall, with a properly built body, ruggedly sculpted with years of voyaging the sea. He’s handsome and has a neatly kept beard.

In Piper’s point of view however, Brendan is a grumpy sea captain who runs No Name, an abandoned bar that serves as a resting spot for him and his crew although initially, he didn’t know it belonged to the new girls.

Piper might be somewhat correct but Brendan was just a man who liked things being in their place and in his view, Piper and her sister Hannah didn’t belong in his town.

Chapter Four

It Happened One Summer Chapter Four

When the two LA girls arrived at Westport, Brendan had been the first to notice them but had just quickly written them off as stupid tourists because of how they were dressed and how far away they were from the normal touring sites in Westport.

He focused his attention back on the tale of his crewmates about the time they caught a king crab. The story was still garnering an audience from the rest of his crew before those two women he spotted outside just barged into their bar.

They were beautiful without a doubt, but he could immediately tell that they didn’t belong there. He however found it ludicrous to believe them when they claimed to own this bar an establishment that had been kept up and running by the folks of this town.

It was when they actually told him who their father was that he actually believed them. Yet it didn’t mean that he had to like them. Their father however was a popular man in Westport before he died, so he knew about Cross.

And when they had demanded to see their accommodation, Brendan was sure as hell that it would only be a matter of moments before they’d squeal and go running back to wherever they came from.
