Part 1: The Story and Main Characters of It Ends With Us
The narrative revolves around Lily Bloom, a young girl who grew up in the small town of Maine. Since she was a little girl, she dreamed about escaping her abusive father and careless mother.
Lily graduated college and moved to Boston where she started her own business. She meets Ryle Kinkaid, a dreamy neurosurgeon whom she starts dating. She finally believes her life is utopic, she has everything she needs and more. Ryle is stubborn but caring and breaks his rule of not dating women for Lily.
To Lily’s surprise, Atlas Corrigan comes to town. He is her ex-boyfriend, her protector from her teen years. His coming to Boston will threaten the life she built with Ryle. Lily will need to make serious decisions regarding her path and choose the one who is right for her.
The characters in It Ends With Us are very well constructed. They each have strong personalities and come along with heavy emotional baggage that they need to control over their journey.
Lily has a great deal of insecurities due to the fact that she grew up in an abusive family. The only person she could rely on in her teens was Atlas Corrigan, a homeless boy who protected her at all costs. They truly save one another. Lily gets devastated when Atlas moves away to find a better life.
Ryle is a dream neurosurgeon. He is handsome and brilliant, he loves Lily but he is also stubborn and even arrogant. He has one rule in his life: not to date anyone. Ryle breaks his own rule by going out with Lily and make her his official girlfriend and eventually, his wife.
He seems utopic at first, but slowly he will reveal his dark side to our protagonist. He will put Lily through hell and fire, tear her apart even further. She will need to be rescued from his demons.
Atlas Corrigan used to be a homeless boy, who escaped his home because of his abusive parents. He finds comfort in Lily and protects her. One day, he leaves his friend to go make a better life. When he returns to Lily, they will feel drawn to one another and he will fight for her against everything and everyone.
The journey of our three characters is hard. They will all need to overcome their ghosts from the past if they want to reach a happy life. The author explains with great details each sequence and you will feel as if you are right there, in the middle of the action.
Be sure that you will only know the outcome of this story in the very last chapter. You may try to predict the end, but it will leave you speechless.
Part 2: The Ending & Author’s Thoughts of It Ends With Us
It can’t come as a surprise that It Ends With Us is the hardest book that Colleen Hoover has written so far. Putting into words such deep feelings, especially since part of them were influenced by her childhood experience, is bound to have a great impact on the writer.
Reading page after page, you can try and guess Lily’s resolution, but the truth is that it is only obvious that her feelings are mixed. Ryle may be this arrogant, sometimes violent man, but he can also be caring and loving. Not to mention that he is the father of her child.
Atlas will always be there for her, as a friend or as a lover. The decision is hard, no matter how you put it. In the end, Lily will have her daughter’s well-being in mind when thinking of her future.
Colleen Hoover, explains in the author’s note section what her mother went through during her marriage with her abusive husband. She needed to create a reading that would empower women and have them educated regarding domestic violence.
I won’t tell you the outcome of Lily’s journey, no heavy spoiler for you today! You will just have to read the novel, like the rest of us.
