Ariadne De Mere was the second child of the capital’s cardinal. The Cardinal De Mere is the highest religious position in the kingdom, but because of the rules associated with the position, the Cardinal was not allowed to be married.
But Cardinal De Mere acquired a legal mistress from the noble society, a high-born lady. From this lady, he had three children, a boy, and two girls. He also had an affair with a low-born woman, an ordinary maid in his manor. The woman gave birth to Ariadne.

On the other hand, Cesare was also born to a common family which made him a low-born. Some even said he was a bastard child… but, whatever may be the truth, Cesare was able to somehow work his way up in the society to the extent that he permeated the royal family.
But no matter how high he climbed, it was never enough, he was unsatisfied and hungry for power. Cesare grow to the extent that he wanted a wife from a noble family.
He requested for Cardinal De Mere to give him his precious, and very beautiful daughter for a bride. But the cardinal offered him, Ariadne, instead, and because a high-born wife was important in his life if he was going to amount to anything in the kingdom, he accepted the offer.
While everything was game to Cesera, Ariadne fell hard in love with her bethroded, she was willing to do anything for this over-ambitious and exceptionally handsome young man.
Ariadne’s sister – Isabella, on the other hand, was a golden girl. Her hair glowed in the sun. They were golden and bright and made her light up every room she stepped in. She carried her shoulders high, over everyone and especially over Ariadne. She was aware that Cesare had asked for her hand in marriage, but as of then, he was a nobody who had nothing much to offer her. What she desperately desired was to be the highest and most respected lady in the kingdom. And Cesare wasn’t in the position to offer that.
While Isabella was was all glowy and pretty, Ariadne had black but lush hair and not as pretty. She was constantly living in her crafty sister’s shadow and was constantly being kept down by her.
Ariadne felt she owed her family for finally seeing her fit of acceptance and that feeling transcended into her relationship with her sister. Both ladies were relocated to the palace.
Cesare arose, planned a coup, and got Ariadne to carry a murder weapon to the crowned prince’s quarters and poisoned him. While she poisoned and killed the prince, Cesare murdered everyone who was loyal to him.
Ariadne thought that she’d finally completely won the heart of her bethroded, it made her happy to see that he was happy by her actions. He rewarded her by making her sovereign in the palace and putting a diamond on her finger.
But after nine years of official engagement, Cesare never made good on any of his promises. He instead informed Ariadne during lovemaking one of the nights that he was going to marry her sister Isabella – the former queen of the kingdom.
Ariadne was mad, she was broken, she was finished, and was locked up in the old castle on the order of Cesare. Her sister Isabella visited her on the coronation, the morning she was supposed to be queen and murdered her in the old castle.
