How can anyone stand being wrongly accused? Stela could be called very mature with how quietly she read the situation and made the decision to extricate herself from it entirely. Did she do the right thing, however? This is up for debate. Could she be said to have run away from the problem without taking the time to explain to the victim that she had no part in it?

Or can we just conclude that things got too messy for her to handle? Keep in mind that she wasn’t only making a decision for herself, but also for the life growing inside of her.

The consequences of her leaving were the trust of the person that she grew up with, loved, and subsequently married. He can’t even look at her without making a face of disgust. How will he feel when he knows that she doesn’t have much longer to live?

What made her come back to this place that was hostile towards her? Stela had no other reason for this than to save the one precious thing she currently had. It is the one person she would protect until she breathed her last. No one was going to hurt him, not if she could help it.

One amazing thing about this book is its concentrated effort on the struggles of the mother. A mother is willing to bear any blame and insult in order to protect her child. She is willing to break off her heart if that is what it would take to preserve her child’s life. Nothing is too far.
