Chapter Six
Maribelle had heard a conversation she should not have. She thought she had escaped successfully, but the people inside had already gotten an impression of her.
Maribelle returned to the party with aching feet. She sat down for some relief, but then her cousin walked over with a few of her friends. They had only just introduced themselves, but then flowed easily into insults. Maribelle took it all in. She was not affected in the least as the three uninformed rats prattled on with their derogation tirade. When she finally spoke, Maribelle’s words struck true to where they should have hurt. The mannerless and insolent young ladies as well as the thing that was her cousin were embarrassed.
They thought it would be easy to deal with Maribelle and have her cower out of fear of reproach. Instead, Maribelle was bored and amused. But then her uncle called out and walked towards them. The spectacle had drawn the attention of quite a small audience. Maribelle had previously been warned or more likely threatened by the same man, to be quiet. Maribelle now was screwed. She tried to escape the confrontation with her uncle but hit a sturdy pillar. It was the emperor.
The man had found her, and Maribelle knew it was to shut her mouth for what she had heard on the terrace.
Maribelle was caught in a bind and suddenly thought of an idea. She put her arms around the emperor’s shoulder and in a voice that only he could hear, she made a bargain. She asked for only three seconds, then she kissed him.
