This work evokes many emotions, largely related to the protagonist. Twelve-Winged Dark Seraphim’s writing puts you in Han Sen’s shoes and forces you to use your imagination.

The story begins by describing Han Sen’s world. Science allows space teleportation in the scenario. One problem. They did not move to a new planet or timeframe using their intergalactic teleportation portals. God’s Sanctuary was an entirely different world with a different lifestyle.

Story juice begins here. Their armament and science cannot be used on the new planet. Ineffective. Humans must return to their roots and study martial arts to live in the new world. Humans fall from the top of the food chain. Humans must kill and consume aliens to obtain geno points and beast souls to grow stronger. Beast souls and geno points allowed one to evolve.

Part 1: Main Theme of Super Gene

Main Theme of Super Gene

The story has quite a heavy emphasis on a natural sort of evolution paired with a sense of discovery. As you progress more and more while reading the story, you learn more about the world that the characters reside in, the world’s background, and the world itself through the eyes of Han Sen.

The author leaves you by yourself to figure out the complex world with deep lore by yourself, giving you minimal hints in the process. The story identifies its main theme as soon as we get insight into the world Han Sen lives in and how he initiates his first few actions.

He starts by killing a black beetle, which had been his previous source of Geno points for a while and those were one of the few primitive creatures he could kill. Though, he eventually stops gaining points from them.

This presents one of the first few halts/hurdles in the story of Han Sen, alongside a few ridiculous ones beforehand in the plot which we will get to. The main character then discovers and eliminates a golden beetle that grants him special versions of Geno points alongside a beast soul.

From being one of the weakest characters in the beginning, struggling to kill even the most basic and primitive creatures, Han Sen finds out that this was just a temporary and passed portion of his life and thus, the series of evolution and discovery throughout the story begins. Han Sen was never weak, never a loser and this is what the main character eventually finds out throughout.

Part 2: Main Character of Super Gene

Super Gene Han Sen

Main Character of Super Gene

The main character of Super Gene, Han Sen, starts out as one of the weakest hunters around. He struggles with defeating even the weakest of creatures and almost had his life taken by literally one of the weakest to exist, the copper-toothed beast. However, one day, he lucked out.

From the ripples of a creek, the corner of his eye spotted a bright golden beetle. Of course, this was unusual to him since he was so used to slaying and eating the pitch-black beetles that were common for him.

After slaying the beetle, he gains a new set of armor and a mysterious crystal of which he is oblivious to the uses. Han Sen progressively gets stronger and cooler throughout the series. I can’t elaborate enough on how I adore his character development and the ‘zero-to-hero’ interpretation that the author fore took. Those are always interesting to read and Super Gene is no exception this time either.

Han Sen always exudes an air of calmness and dignity. The fact that Han Sen never takes anything without first considering all of the possible outcomes is something that is made clear from the very beginning of the series.

A further trait of his is that he is perpetually disoriented, which, taken together, strongly suggests that he is perpetually surrounded by people who are significantly more knowledgeable than he is regarding everything.

I genuinely cannot believe after reading the first few chapters that Han Sen could say, in such an epic fashion, “Not bad. You survived a serious strike from me,” just slightly later on. His serious side is a portion of the series that I absolutely love.

However, his family issues are something I found rather perplexing. I felt a mix of emotions that I cannot quite put into words. Though Han Sen still portrays himself as someone who cares for his family deeply and this is displayed numerous times throughout the novel which I quite liked.

Han Sen eventually starts to gain a level of greed but is still sacrificial for the sake of his family and for his benefit as well. A very realistic character, indeed.

Part 3: Comedic Moments in Super Gene

Comedic Moments in Super Gene

A moment in chapter 2 that I am almost obligated to mention is one in which Han Sen’s background as to how he got into God’s Sanctuary is elaborated. He comes through the teleporter and then is immediately greeted by a giant white wolf unicorn that would naturally freak anyone out.

Thinking it was hostile, Han Sen pulled out his dagger and immediately stabbed the unicorn in its buttocks. However, it was not a unicorn’s buttocks that he had stabbed. It was a human! He had stabbed Qin Xuan, the greatest hunter around who was just using a beast soul to transform into a unicorn.

Qin Xuan declared that whoever befriended Han Sen from there on would be her enemy. Nobody desired to be Qin Xuan’s enemy and therefore, Han Sen was secluded from pretty much everyone and gained the nickname, ‘Ass Freak.’ I found this moment hilarious beyond belief in the story and it was one of the main hooks for me.

Part 4: Conclusive Remarks

I end by appreciating the author and how beautifully he empowered a character that seemed to be beyond hopeless in the beginning. With no hope, no power, and nobody to help, it was very interesting to read about how Han Sen progressively grew stronger and developed his awesome personality. At times though, I do ponder the question as to whether the main character is progressing a little too much or too little at times which may present some issues with pacing.

Han Sen discovers more and more about the world he resides within and then develops himself thereon. His interactions with enemies and side characters range from being epic to hilarious or even sorrowful at times.

Going into the story, I was under the assumption that I would be greeted with a stereotypical story in which a weak character gets overpowered and while the story may just be that, its execution has something different to it that I deem nothing short of inexplicable and beautiful. Super Gene is one of those novels that you truly appreciate once you actually give it a read, and here I heavily suggest you do.
