*Sigh* Susannah or Beck (as Belly’s mother would call her dearest friend) died of cancer. Yes, as much as she tried to give hope to everyone around her and be hopeful herself, she didn’t make it. The story starts with a heartbroken Belly. It was summer, and she was not in the beach house. After spending nearly seventeen years of her life at the beach house, she suddenly stopped, and she stopped because of the most heart-wrenching reason. Susannah’s death caused a lot of heartache and events It was summer, and Belly was going to attend the birthday party of one of her schoolmates, instead of being at the beach house. She was upset, she was irritated, she was disappointed, and she was detached from reality.

, At the beginning, of the book, Belly could be seen daydreaming about Conrad Fisher. I for one was excited when I started reading the book and Belly was explaining how she was kissing Conrad Fisher, and he was kissing her back, only for me to be rudely awakened by Taylor’s bossy conversation with Belly.

Part 1: Main Story of it’s Not Summer Without You

it's Not Summer Without You Susannah

It’s Not Summer Without You Susannah. Indeed! I for one could feel it when I read the book. She was the backbone and essence of the summer vacations that both families had together, and then she died. Everything fell apart after that. Belly, who had just started to gain a footing around Conrad, the love of her life, had to start all over again with him.

He escorted her to prom, and they were starting to be a thing, even if they were not yet defined, he had started to pay attention to her, and Belly was hopeful. The next thing Susannah died. Everything spiraled back to square one. It became so bad that Belly found it difficult to call Conrad, and Jeremiah as well. What would she tell them? Sorry that your mom died. It didn’t even sound right. Susannah was a mother to Belly as well as a friend she could rely on, and then she died. Such heartbreak. It’s Not Summer Without You Susannah.

One of the things that further annoyed Belly was the fact that a young chap in her school now had the avenue to confess his feelings to her, and dared to like her. Cory Wheeler, a fine lad as well, though he could not be compared to Conrad Fisher in any way, made advances at Belly.

If she was at the beach house at Cousins, would she be available for him to spew his interest in her? It’s not like Cory was any less of a boy or anything, but the fact was that, if Susannah were alive, Belly would be at Cousins by then, and Cory would not find her available for him.

I totally understand Belly’s irritation. The preparation for Susannah’s funeral was intense, and the funeral itself left everyone in tears. Even her distant husband Mr. Fisher was not left out in the spill of tears that graced Susannah’s funeral.

Grown men like Mr. Fisher, cold-hearted boys like Conrad Fisher, and ever-happy boys like Jeremiah Fisher were left snorting back intense feelings while they tried to control their tears, but they couldn’t.

Heck, I couldn’t hold back tears from falling from my eyes while reading the book, and I don’t know Susannah in any way, nor is the hook based on real-life events. At least the author never mentioned that the book was based on real feelings.

An incident that is worth taking note of, happened after the funeral, during the reception at the home of the Fishers. Jeremiah, Belly, and her brother Steve were in Jeremiah’s room when Jeremiah asked Belly to help them get some food from downstairs. Belly went to get food and happened to serve Conrad Fisher first. He was in the basement. The basement was Conrad’s haven, so it was not absurd to find him there.

However, when Belly got to the basement, she found Conrad Fisher stroking the long and beautiful legs of another female, and she couldn’t stand it. Jealousy arose inside her belly, and she left the room. But Conrad pursued her, trying to explain that she had no reason to be worried about what she saw, but it didn’t do any good, as Belly lost her self-control and said hurtful things to him.

This was happening during summer. If Susannah were alive, it would not have happened as such.

It’s Not Summer Without You Susannah, and this is coming from me. I couldn’t believe how fast everything spiraled for the worst as a result of Susannah’s passing. Due to the heaviness that Conrad Fisher felt, as a result, of losing his mother and hearing Belly say hurtful things to him, he took off. He disappeared into thin air.

Chapter 1

it's Not Summer Without You Conrad

Jenny Han deceived us a little bit when this chapter started. Belly was kissing Conrad, or Conrad was kissing her, either way, it was not real, as Belly was daydreaming while she was at the beach, not at Cousins. Sussanah had died, and Belly was having a hard time getting over it.

She was not at Cousins and it was summer and she couldn’t quite get used to it. Her anger could be seen when Cory came over to her with a lame joking stunt, and she overreacted. Like I said earlier, I cannot blame Belly. I probably would have reacted worse to Cory at that time.

Several times, Taylor, Belly’s friend had tried to coax her into accepting Cory’s advances, but she deftly refused. It would feel as if I were derailing if it were me, I cannot stress enough how Belly is not to be blamed at all for her behavior towards Cory. it’s Not Summer Without You Susannah, it’s Not Summer Without You Conrad.

When Conrad tried to explain to her that it was nothing to worry about, Belly lost her temper and said hurtful things to him, including I hate you.
