Main Plot of The Exorcism of Carmen Farias
After her mom’s untimely death, Carmen Farias (Camila Sodi), a journalist, inherits her grandmother’s creepy house.
At the beginning of the movie, Carmen goes through two successive terrible events― grieving over a miscarriage and the death of her mother.
Carmen holds her mother in her hospital bed. Then, Carmen’s mother asks for forgiveness a moment before she dies. Carmen gets confused: Is her mother asking forgiveness from or from her?
After reading her mother’s will, Carmen is surprised to know that she has the right to her deceased grandmother’s old house, a place she thought had been sold long ago.
Married for three years to her amazing husband Julian, she tells him how sad she is having lost her baby and mother. Julian, seeing her grief, suggests that a change of scenery might be good for Carmen.
She decides to move to the old house with her husband and their dog, without knowing the dark secrets it harbors.
Eventually, Carmen discovers a secret about her grandmother. She thinks it will make a great story for a feature article, so she decides to pursue it.
But first, she must track down a priest on one of the old videotapes she saw. She’s happy that the priest is still in town. However, he is now retired, blind, and frail.
After speaking to the priest (Juan Carlos Colombo) they agree to come to the house for an interview. Carmen wants to know what usually happens there and what role her grandmother played in it. However, the interview ends abruptly because strange things start to happen.
Carmen and the priest try to escape as more horror unfolds in the house. The film ended just like many horror movies in a haunted old house do. But I don’t want to tell you exactly how it ended because I don’t want to spoil the whole movie.

If that seems familiar, it’s because it never deviates from the tried and established structure of haunted house movies (frightening nightmares, mysterious noises, and eponymous exorcism).
The rich sound design, score, and cinematography build a terrifying spell though. When combined, they ensure that every creak is noticed and every scene is interesting.
Rodrigo Fiallega’s magnificent dream sequences are also misused in favor of stale genre cliches. Catholicism and its weird rites are palpable, perhaps because the film is Mexican.
