We’ve always been equipped with freedom to choose what’s right for us. It’s the first privilege we got the day we were born, and only one that we’ll possess until the day we die. To not practice it to the right use and take advantage of it by consistently going to the wrong choice is practically an act of abuse towards the freedom that our parents gave, and the soldiers fought for us to receive. It’s a fact that many recognize in our modern day, and yet people kept making bad choices, and doing mistakes as though consequences cannot be deadly.

It’s one of Emily’s rant towards our society today. She never understood why some people are choosing the wrong direction over the right one. She knew how terrible the consequences of it and how dangerous it can be as her parents had been victims of crime. She feared doing mistakes as much as she feared how it would affect someone’s life or feelings.

Which is why when Matthew-her fiance-began to act indifferently and distant before their wedding, she began to worry if she did the right thing of choosing him as her lifetime partner. To regret the decision that she thoroughly prepared and contemplated is what she wanted to avoid at all costs. Because if she’s correct, how can she handle it? How different would she be to those individuals whose lives have been wasted terribly?

As she tried to fix it, she added more fuel to the fire when she fell in love with Matthew’s brother, Jackson who happens to be the complete opposite version of her fiance. What she feared the most have become her greatest addiction. And from the woman who’s anxious to induce trauma to other people, she became careless and unbothered as to what will people say.

Will their love still prevail despite the damage it can cause to everyone they love? And how will Emily come terms to herself that making errors isn’t criminal offense and being herself is an important part of her life? Most importantly, who will win her love and loyalty in the end?

Part 1: Plot Overview of My Fiance’s Brother

My Fiance's Brother – Emily and Jason

The plot goes like this: Emily is in love with Matthew but because of his sudden act of coldness, and harsh treatment, she began to feel if marrying her would be the right choice. In the middle of her going back and forth speculation, she found refuge in his brother’s arms, Jackson, who’s a Navy Seal, and currently living in their house because of some problems in his work. She wouldn’t have fallen for her if he wasn’t different, caring, and Matthew’s complete opposite. She knew it’s a sin to commit an affair. Much terrible if it’s your fiance’s brother.

But Emily couldn’t care much because Matthew is increasingly getting more cold and ruthless to her. The never-ending speculation and hunches all comes to an end when Matthew finally admitted the truth behind his sudden change. As it turns out, he’s been having an affair with his bitchy friend, Julie, and he only proposed to her because of her money.

My Fiance's Brother – Emily Leaving Matthew

This, automatically, torn Emily apart. At the same time, she’s relieved that she avoided a senseless marriage, and being with Jackson isn’t really a bad decision, after all. Matthew’s confession unloaded Emily from the burden she was carrying and in the process of healing, she slept with Jackson.

The series of euphoria ended swiftly when Matthew got into car accident, and as a result of the surgery he had gone through, he underwent retrogade amnesia, which only means he’s not capable of remembering what happened prior to the accident. What’s more annoying than his accident is Emily isn’t allowed to tell Matthew that they’ve broken up, and she has no other choice but to continue the wedding.

My Fiance's Brother – Emily's Pregnancy

Just as all of these are unfolding, Emily discovered she’s pregnant. Instead of telling Jackson that he’s the father, she planned to pass Matt off as the father. Jackson is heartbroken because of this. He wanted to stop her but it’s the health of his brother so he has no other choice either.

In the end, rationality finally wrapped around Emily’s brain. She realized it’s not worth the sacrifice to spend her entire lifetime drowned in a loveless marriage while her real love is alone, and suffering in silence. She still chose what’s right, and what would be permanent. She prioritized her own happiness instead of pleasing people, and for her, that is the most honorary thing that she ever done her whole life.

Part 3: Evaluation and a Similar Book on Dreame

When I first read the premise, I thought it would be just another case of a failed forbidden romance that’s only appealing because of good marketing. Though some parts of the novel lived up to my expectations, I’d be hypocrite to say that I did not enjoy it.

In terms of sensuality and the spikes in my emotions that it caused, it was exemplary. The plot may be predictable, but the way it was delivered, and the way it was unpacked was worth the time. I enjoyed reading the interactions between Emily and Jackson, and Emily’s inner monologue didn’t fail to have an effect on me as I read it.

The prose made the whole story easier to read and absorb. I didn’t have a hard time finishing it in a day, and though short, I was able to squeeze the most out of it. I absolutely recommend this for those wants an easier to digest stories, and simple plots. But definitely not for people who doesn’t like a shallow journey.

Callie Drake always felt she had a pretty good life- a loving, if flawed husband of seventeen years, four wonderful children, a comfortable existence nestled in suburban. But hopes of a mindless fling quickly die in the face and body of Callie, and he finds himself drawn to her in ways that neither her -nor her husband- ever considered. One touch and he knows that he must have her in ways never intended…a touch that turns into a taste, a taste that turns into a carnal feast as Callie too finds herself subject to a hunger previously only known within the bounds of her marriage.
