Her power is in her words. Whew! What is she? Reading this premise of The Bird And The Sword intrigued me, and so without thinking twice, I picked up the book. Politics. War. Magic. Romance. These are all incorporated in The Bird And The Sword.

I was also enticed by how poetic the blurb sounds since I’m a fan of prose. I don’t care about the voice used in the story, I can adjust to any kind of the point of view, but this is honestly the first time I enjoy reading a first-person point of view. Okay, so what are The Bird And The Sword?

Part 1: The Bird And Sword Summary

The Bird And The Sword Plot

Close your mouth upon the power, curse not, cure not, til the hour. You won’t speak and you won’t tell, you won’t call on heaven or hell. You will learn and you will thrive. Silence, Daughter. Stay alive.

Once upon a time in The Bird And The Sword, the Gifted used to roam freely throughout Jeru’s nation. They were divinely endowed with abilities as healers, tellers, spinners, or changers. Yet some of them turned evil. The gifted were therefore sought after.

They either kept their skills a secret or received harsh punishment. Lark’s mother was murdered. Lark’s voice also left her body when her mother was killed for a crime she didn’t even commit. Although she had to be protected by her father out of necessity, she was largely neglected and left alone.

Up until Prince Tiras used her as a pawn in his desperate battle against the nightmare creatures that endangered his people and his land. Lark was therefore silenced. She becomes a young woman and she hasn’t spoken a word.

The Bird And The Sword Weapon

I am not a weapon. I don’t want to be a weapon!’

You are what you are. I am what I am. It matters little what we want

But when they were assaulted by an unknown darkness known as Legion, Lark used her thoughts and power to help Tiras. Since then, Prince Tiras slowly teaches Lark to read as he battles the darkness through time. Prince Tiras of The Bird And The Sword discovers that he can converse and gains control of Lark’s abilities.

Lark and Tiras seek out others who have particular talents and learn from them as they look for a solution to overcome the encroaching darkness, and as they do that their love for one another increases, but some people want to keep them apart because they know about her secret. While Lark’s power multiplied.

Now, the outcome of the violent conflict would be decided by Lark, the quiet girl with the power of words, for Lark, she is The BirdThe Sword.

Part 2: Main Protagonists of The Bird And Sword

The Bird And The Sword Characters

Lark

” You don’t need wings to fly”

She is The Bird And Sword. I like how Lark’s character was embodied as The Bird And The Sword. She is the center of the story. The plot revolves around her. The author was perfect in crafting Lark’s character as well as building the plot and setting around her.

There is a story because there is Lark. I rarely read a book made this way. And this is awesome. Lark, The Bird, And The Sword is a very likable character. I must admit she’s one of the most unique characters I read. Imagine a mute whose power rests in words.

That is she. And to add she’s a woman of wisdom. There are substances in dialogues she says. The making of Lark as The Bird And The Sword was creative and imaginative.

Prince Tiras

“Without desire, there is only duty. But sometimes our greatest desire is to do our duty.”

Tiras is a new King. His character in The Bird And The Sword is snarky and arrogant. His purpose for Lark at first was to take her as hostage and pawn. But later on, as they go on adventures together he has a character development when he falls for Lark.

Part 3: Plot Review of The Bird And The Sword

The Bird And The Sword Book Cover

I was wondering how the author would show the arch as Lark as being mute. It was such a hard part for the author to show such effective scenes, and I must agree the writing style of The Bird And The Sword was excellent for showing the mute Lark was effective.

In The Bird And The Sword, emotion was a major driving force in the narrative. The author has a way with words.

I love the prose and the poetic sounds of every dialogue. It complements the magic theme of the plot. It’s fascinating to read the narrative from Lark’s point of view since we can infer her emotions from her inner dialogue and the way she gestures to other people since she is unable to talk.

Things become even more dramatic when she catches the king’s attention and they begin to get to know each other. But if there’s something that I’m in awe of more about The Bird And The Sword, is its concept.

Imagine a mute girl whose power rests in her words is herself The Bird And The Sword, the sole weapon which the King needed to maintain the kingdom, and the King who plans to use her as a pawn unintentionally falls in love with her. Such a beautiful plot concept.
