I like you. You can like whatever you want.
The story tells of the relationship between a girl and her regular neighborhood villain. Through the years they have known each other, the two people fall into an uncommon relationship. Without the exchange of a defining label for what they have, they continue forward, dropping into each other’s lives at random times. Their hearts seem so unrelated and unconcerned on the surface, however, underneath the antagonism and cold replies, a sliver of warmth and dependence is clear.
Born As A Villain is so blunt in its representation of this love-hate relationship. The disguised affection, hidden behind an indifferent attitude is a wonderful draw to this piece. The exploration of the problems of adolescence and the trivialities that seem so large at that age, all of these factors find a way to impossibly hold the reader hostage in a vividly clear world.
Watching as the female lead supposedly escapes the villain, only to find him two steps behind her and with him is the thing she hungers for, this element is so thrilling. The author makes quick work of the readers’ emotions in this beautifully crafted one-shot.
You could not find a more perfect short story to take you on a wild ride. From their days as children to their time together as adults, the strange magic between the two characters is the most attractive force you can imagine.
The author is at fault for any tears shed. Just a warning, this is not a typical villain story.

Part 1: The Story Of Born As A Villain
The story follows the life of Qiu Li and the narrator. From a young age, Qiu Li has been known to get into trouble. He bothers the narrator anytime he pleases, taking her things from her all the time. The narrator can’t help but feel a grievance against this person who bullies her all the time. They grow up living next door to each other, inexplicably getting involved in each other’s lives. From childhood to their teenage years, nothing changed about Qiu Li. He took what he wanted and did whatever he wanted. One time he even had the narrator steal from a store and run away afterward. The two people were just like this. There was no hate between them, everything was just a state of being.
When the narrator found her first love on the class monitor, she was excited. At the same period, she got her menstrual cycle. Somehow, Qiu Li managed to embarrass her enough to ruin that first love. Yet, she said nothing. The narrator continues to encounter Qiu Li in many other ways, even after her family moved away from the villain. Eventually, they entangled and a child was conceived.
The villain, Qiu Li, one day disappeared, and the narrator could only hear about his well-being from outsiders. The narrator wants Qiu Li to come back home already, but it was destined to not happen that way.
Not long after all the deeds of the villain reached her ears, the narrator hears that he’s dead. She doesn’t believe it at all. Even when she received a large amount of money and a message saying he was dead and she should not wait for him, the narrator believed he was alive somewhere. Even when she saw the corpse…
Part 2: Main Characters Of Born As A Villain
Qui Li
He grew up a reckless child. A child that was avoided by other children and adults alike. For reason of who his father was and his mother’s treatment of him, Qiu Li grew up excluded. He and the narrator formed a relationship that was not a relationship on the surface. They seemed to care for one another, but while one was silent, the other was harsh.
Qiu Li with his harsh words is unaccustomed to the kindness or simple nature of the narrator. Unlike the narrator, Qiu Li grew up in a home lacking warmth. With a gangster father and an abusive mother, he never got to experience parental love. Qiu Li bothered the one person who would always appear not far away, the narrator. When she moved, he found her.
She was being robbed, yet he only added fuel to the flames by mentioning her family’s wealth. He found his way into her bed and she conceived his child. After suddenly leaving, he never came back. But, he didn’t forget to provide for his child.
Qiu Li can’t be called a very passionate man or even one with a warm bone in his body. Nevertheless, he is one who understands relationships and responsibilities. This villain wasn’t very cared for and grew up in a harsh environment. The narrator was almost a lighthouse. One he would always come back to, until the day he didn’t.
Part 3: About The Author
Fan Da Wang
The author of the novel Born As A Villain, has also successfully published several others. They include, and are not limited to: I Want You To Grow Old, Who Can Keep The Moon Private By Love, To Your Island. One of the books the author is already adapted into a film. This book is, Who Can Keep The Moon Private By Love.
The author very much understands how to capture the essence of a tale and implant its very constant and immersive detail in the heart of the readers. Born As A Villain isn’t overshadowed by any other with such prime themes and thinly veiled contempt for a society that inadvertently punishes a child for whom they’re born to.
Born As A Villain makes its own special mark out of all the worlds the author has created. This surprisingly sad tale is one that will be hard to forget.
