Grisham’s narrator is Paul Tracey, the grown son of Warren Tracey, a former New York Mets journeyman pitcher. Paul tells the story in flashbacks for the most part. Paul was 11 years old during Calico Joe’s rookie season in 1973. He was baseball’s boy wonder and the most outstanding rookie anyone had ever seen.
Calico Joe quickly became a baseball fan’s idol, including Paul Tracey, the young son of a hard-partying and hard-throwing Mets pitcher. Paul was in the stands when Warren Tracey finally faced Calico Joe, rooting not only for his idol but also for his father. Warren then delivered a fastball that changed their lives forever.

Part 1:Story of The Baseball Book by John Grisham
The story, Baseball Book by John Grisham, is told through the eyes of Paul Tracy, son of fictitious Mets pitcher Warren Tracy, and is set in both the summer of 1973 and the present day. The Mets and Cubs are locked in a pennant race at the season’s halfway point. Young Paul is a die-hard Mets fan who, of course, wants to root for his father.
But Paul’s father is unconcerned about what his son Paul wants and needs from him. Warren enjoys the nightlife and is frequently abusive to Paul and his mother. Joe Castle, a young phenom recently called up by the Cubs due to injuries to some of their other players, puts Paul’s tenuous loyalty to his father to the test.
Warren Tracy, who is fighting for his job as the Mets’ fourth starter behind Seaver, Koosman, and Matlack, is also fighting for his son’s loyalty, if not his love. The inevitable on-field clash between the young phenom and the journeyman pitcher has tragic consequences.
Calico Joe’s career is over, and he returns to Calico Rock, partially paralyzed and unable to speak, to work as a groundskeeper rather than being inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame. Decades later, Paul, who has been estranged from his father for many years, learns that Warren is dying of pancreatic cancer, and he decides to push his father to face what he did to Joe Castle. Amusingly, Warren is the novel’s most fully formed character, and while the narrative and settings are solid, the story drifts toward an unsatisfying, perhaps too easy, conclusion. A Landmark reconciliation story.
Part 2:Shining figures in Baseball Book by John Grisham
Calico Joe
Calico Joe is a fictional character created by author John Grisham for his novel Calico Joe. Calico Joe is the main character of the Baseball Book by John Grisham. Joe Castle is a young man from Calico Rock, Arkansas. He is a minor-league baseball player and has been called to the majors.
Calico Joe became every baseball fan in America, including Paul Tracey, the young son of a hard-partying, hard-throwing Mets pitcher, who instantly adopted him as their hero. There has never been anything like “Calico Joe,” as the media starts to refer to him, in baseball.
Baseball fans throughout the country become virtual Cubs fans overnight as a result of “Calico Joe’s” incredible on-field exploits. “Calico Joe,” who was from a small-town native of the Ozarks, shatters rookie records.
Warren Tracey
Warren Tracey is a major league baseball player who is well known. He has a son named Paul Tracey, whom the story is told to us through his eyes. Warren Tracey, Paul’s father, however, shows to have little interest in what Paul wants or needs from him. Paul and his mother frequently suffer abuse from Warren, who enjoys the nightlife.
Paul Tracey
Paul is the son of a famous baseball player and has always wanted to be just like his father. Paul was used by the author John Grisham as the eye of the story, where Paul unfolds the story as much as the tale in flashbacks.
Let’s say that young Paul does not have a loving father-son bond that is based on sharing Cracker Jack and peanuts at the local baseball game. Paul wants to respect his father, but Warren is just too evil. It also doesn’t help that Warren makes the pitch that kills Joe’s career and leaves him with physical impairments.
