Part 1: Interesting Storyline of The Highland Fling

The Highland Fling starts off when Bonnie and her best friend Dakota moved into the idyllic town of Corsekelly, mainly to escape the complications of their lives back in the city. Having recently been fired from her job, Bonnie seeks an opportunity that would rebuild her confidence and love for her career.

They set up a plan to start a business or apply for a job in Corsekelly, expecting the best, and hoping they won’t encounter any obstacle that would make them regret their decision.

That obstacle materialized into a person when Bonie met Rowan-the gruff, and serious handyman that instantly tested Bonie’s patience. He finds the tourist having so many unattractive traits. Loud, antagonizing, and too confident.

He doesn’t know why but he felt great pleasure whenever he teases her. Bonnie, on the other hand, thinks of Rowan as too much of a traditional lad. He kept scrutinizing her and aggravating her without even hearing what she truly feels. She hated it, but the man was always persistent to stay in her mind.

The Highland Fling Bonie and Rowan

One interaction after another, and they continued to get on each other’s skin. But no matter how they tried to cover up their growing feelings, it’s becoming apparent they need each other. Their back-and-forth teasing slowly evolved into an undeniable connection and desire.

Until one event triggered them to set aside their shallow hate, and give in to the gnawing sensation of love happening between them.

But their relationship didn’t go rainbows and butterflies in an exceptional love story, as Rowan needed to face his personal demons and Bonnie must ensure her development, resulting in the inevitable rattle of their love. They ended up choosing what was good for them, and although it hadn’t been easy, it become worth in the end.

Part 3: Evaluation of The Highland Fling

At first, I thought The Highland Fling wouldn’t fit my taste as a reader and I would be having a hard time finishing it. Boy, I was wrong, all throughout the beginning, I was already engrossed in it. The enemies-to-lovers trope that was hinted at the first interaction of the characters immediately took me in and gripped me ”til the last page. I loved the characters and the inner struggles that they completely overcome after a considerable amount of time. Though they were in contrast, it’s amazing how Meghan Quinn structured effective ways to make them a match. She didn’t fail on representing the highlands of the town, using splendid narrative techniques to correctly show them.

The ending was unexpected. I disliked Rowan’s way of handling it, but gratefully, it still paid off and didn’t become a disappointment. Overall, it’s a great story, a perfect introduction for Meghan Quinn, and one that completely summarizes her style as a romance writer. I’m looking forward to reading another book from her.

This is definitely recommended for those who have a soft spot for age-gap romance and small-town love.
